So I know the drama is going to rain down from all the paleo eaters out there, but I HATE meat.  Seriously.... this is an issue that I've had for the last 28 years.  I hate hate hate hate hate it! I eat some on occasion, but more often than not I have to gag it down & force myself to keep it down.  I don't like the taste or the texture.... I don't like milk or cheese really.... eggs are acceptable... turkey sausage is ok... my answer to this in the past has always been excessive amounts of starches.... that's not a good option & got me to a very bad... very fat place.  I have worked my butt off (literally) to drop about 60lbs & go from.a 16 to a 6... I'm so close to being fit & firm... I have a really firm core but its covered by what's left of my tummy fat... Joe keeps telling me abs are made in the kitchen & the only method I can see for healthy eating is vegetarian with some occasional meat consumption like turkey sausage & tuna steak... I want/need opinions.... what do you guys think?
Because that's the way I tuck and roll...

Fish is a viable alternative.

Seriously though you can't eat ANY type of meat?...

Those poor animals... Waiting to be devoured... Why won't you bring them fulfillment?!? WHYYYYYY?!?!?!?!? Sorry, just a little Paleo humor there.

That's crazy though, so it has nothing to do with the eating of once living beings? You may be the first person I've met that doesn't like meat... Because of meat...

Joe keeps telling me abs are made in the kitchen...

I speak truth to you. :)

Lets consider wild game, considering it has a totally different texture and flavor.  Would that be a possibility?  I'd like to see what kind of diet can be made on a hybrid vegetarian system.  I still stick by eating veggies and meats, but if that's not an option, then hopefully someone has a good answer for you.

It has nothing to do with animal rights... I could care less if food has a face.

We could try wild game, but I can only eat so much... I couldn't live off of it.

I'll eat some fish... occasionally tuna...... but that's really the only fish I like & I have tried to live off of it before & failed... I totally burn out on it after awhile.

The good news is I threw seT all the pasta we had in the house! Too much temptation...

What are your thoughts on smaller game and poultry? You said cow to moose, I'm not sure what that all entails. Obviously this runs into the realm of "hard to get" and probably a bit pricey if you're not doing it yourself, but it's worth looking into I suppose.

I grew up in Alaska so moose was not hard to get.... that's what my parents fed us when we were kids... I don't really like poultry... turkey in certain forms and low portions is ok... but chicken is really hard for me to handle... I've had rabbit, snake, and a variety of other small game, but not really for me... deer is ok... as is elk... but nonetheless at some point my body registers that it is meat and I get really grossed out.

I'm really researching and looking into the lacto-ovo vegitarian diet... where I would keep milk products, eggs, and fish....

That's decent I suppose.

You gotta make sure you get enough good fats in your diet though

Joe and I have been doing a lot of research into what makes a nutritional diet for a vegetarian... I sent him links from places like the ADA and AHA and Mayo Clinic, etc... he came back with clear and concise this is how you make it healthy and build muscle while eating vegetarian... I feel like between the two of us we've got a good understanding of how to get all the nutrients I need and we'll adjust as my body needs it.

I've been considering this switch for the last 12 years and finally am going for it... not knowing how to go about this nutritionally is what has stopped me, but I feel like with Joe in my corner I can go about it the right way...

Which factors do you have to manage?

I'm curious if you know all of the ones you have to.

What are the likely deficiencies on a vegetarian diet and how do you solve them

For questions like this I defer to Joe... he is the one who really watches out for me nutritionally... I had no idea what I was doing before Joe came along.... it's one of the reasons I keep him around, that and he totally lets me cuddle with him when it's cold outside.

Dietary protein while avoiding an overload of starches is one of the bigger concerns that I have.  It's hard to get a decent balance without eating meat, and I have NO intention of altering my diet in this direction.  On the other hand, Sarai eats crap, so anything in the direction of "I like it" might make eating healthier an easier option.

I'll list what I'm trying to balance for her, and you point out what I'm missing.

Protein, Fats, sodium and iodine (as most vege-diets are lacking here), calcium, iron, Fat Soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K), Water Soluble Vitamins (c, thiamin, riboflavin, b6, b12, niacin, folate), zinc, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, and certainly potassium.  Omega 3s (as a fat) comes from flax, and I'm trying to get her to throw some flax on about everything you can imagine.

With her being the Lacto-Ovo brand of Vegetarian, this is a lot easier to make happen.  Eggs and Milk shall be staples to making it all work.  If there are concerns that I need to be made aware of, post away, because this is happening, and I'm doing my best to make it a good thing.

Oh, you asked for the "likely deficiencies and how to solve them"...so I'll tackle the top 5.  Covering everything is a lot of typing.

Good quality protein sources: Hemp seed nut and flour, tofu, beans (kidney, black, garbanzo, soy, adzuki), legumes, whey/casein shakes, milk, eggs.
Good quality fat sources: extra virgin olive oil, flax seed oil, hemp seed oil, avocado, non-roasted nuts and seeds, whole milk.
Good sodium/iodine: iodized sea salt...for flavoring.
Good Calcium: almonds beans, dark/leafy green vegetables (spinach, kale), sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, whole milk.
Good Iron: green beans, walnuts/almonds.

The issues that I have is that things like blackstrap molasses is a great nutritional additive, but spikes insulin levels.  If someone has links to a website that provides decent answers to how to make this work for athletes, then I'm all ears.  She's currently doing body-weight strength work and a scaled brand of the Crossfit WOD, and I think that should also me considered as to how much of a caloric requirement we're dealing with.

Yes, I asked because most people don'tknow and just blindly eat.

Depending on someone for your nutritional needs/information is NOT a good idea. You should be proactive abou this yourself

On the same boat, I could give a shit less about the animals lol. I just really don't like the texture and taste of some meats. Last year with the start of parkour I also started eating chicken. My advice

  • Protein Shakes
  • If you need more nutrients, look at Ensure drinks

I learn from him... I'm terrible at research and he is amazing at it... plus all of the nutritional stuff makes sense to him... I could read for 30 days and not understand anything at all... I just don't get the numbers and the chemistry... it makes no sense at all to me... I have always eaten because it tastes good.... you should have seen me before he came along and taught me as much as he has.... I'm way more educated in nutrition, but I have a long way to go as well and as I do now I will depend on him to help me.  That's what partnerships are for.... you work together with your strengths.... and rely on the other person for your weaknesses.
