Parkour and Quidditch?
« on: March 18, 2011, 02:06:50 AM »
As a casual Harry Potter fan (watched the movies and cant force myself through the books) and avid Traceur, I stumbled across some interesting information the other day. Visiting my local game shop looking for a new board game I saw a flyer for a local Quidditch league...

 :o

With a wife that loves the Harry Potter series we looked up the website from the flyer as soon as we got home.

Link---> International Quidditch Association

We watched a video of the Quidditch World Cup and it seemed kinda cool. Nerdy, but cool.

One of the highlights of the video was how the game uses a "Human snitch". For those of you who don't know what a snitch is in relation to Harry Potter: The Snitch is a game ball used in Quidditch that flies all around the area of the Quidditch match. It is not limited to just the playing field. Well in the International Quidditch Association's game the "Human snitch" Is a player that is not on either team at play and runs and evades the 2 team's seekers. This is where the Parkour comes in! If you land yourself a position as a "Human Snitch" you can get all your Parkour training done during a match. Having 2 players chase you around while you evade them, making a scene, and pleasing the crowd. Sounds like a blast to me.

This seems to be another way to get Parkour out to the world. Evade the seekers throw some cool vaults as the crowd watches. For the more gymnasticly inclined throw some tumbling moves across the field. People will ask where you learned your moves and skill and you can tell them "Parkour!" Now I know that this "sport" wont be everywhere but there are tons of colleges that have a team. (Check out the website for the list) If you feel you want to up your game, test your skills in a welcoming environment, and not be the weirdest guy there running and vaulting for what seems to on lookers for no reason. See if you can find a Quidditch team ner you! :D

I'm thinking of seeing if my local group needs a snitch. I would like to see them catch me!

... Not a Harry Potter fan... I still might see if the nearby colleges have a team...

"Mr. BK, we're going to have to ask you to leave the game."
"What? Why?"
"Well, you're just too hard for the players to catch."

First off all I'm a huge Harry Potter fan/nerd. I've known about the Quidditch league when I first watched a video for a HP convention where all the wizard rockers played. Anyways, this is a brilliant idea. A human snitch with awesome parkour skills. It creates a amazing challenge.

You sir, are amazing for bringing this up. Anyways, I'm sure there is a Quidditch team near me I mean if they have a Pokemon League Gym at the university it wouldn't be a long shot for a Quidditch league.

We have a quidditch tournament in my school at the end of the year. Last year, I was a seeker, but it's really easy to catch the snitch in general, so this year I've been thinking about being the snitch. I feel like it would be more of a challenge to catch a snitch that moves over and under obstacles than a snitch that has to stick to flat ground.

The great thing about the rules used in this version is the Snitch is not limited to the playing field. The snitch has its own boundaries that encompass the area around the field. This gives you more opportunities to evade in more Parkour friendly terrain.

While training on the University of MN campus last spring, a bunch of us noticed the U quidditch league playing at the river flats below.  It was hilarious, but we had the exact idea of playing the Snitch.  The Snitch they had was this super skinny distance runner guy dressed in gold spandex running all over the place.  It was quite hilarious, because not only was he a good runner, but he did not have to carry a mini-broom between his legs like everyone else (which looks ridiculous by the way).  Being able to leave the playing field is awesome though, as above the park is campus, which is by far the best place to train in all of MN.  We immediately wanted to join.  Team Snitch, anyone?
Train safe, play hard, and dream of flight.

If I could find a team nearby, I would try it. Good idea.

10 points for Gryffindor!

Don't you mean 50 points to Slytherin?

I need to find a team near me. This would be so much fun.

Agreed on both counts. Slytherin FTW!

I think the idea sounds way fun. But am I the only one that thinks that having to actually hold a broom between your legs is just dumb?

I agree about the broomstick. I'm sure the reason why they have it like that is because to try to stay as true to quidditch as possible.
