My Knee Pain
« on: March 09, 2011, 07:16:03 AM »
I have knee pain almost every time I train. It usually doesn't hurt that bad, and I can push through it. The worst that happens though, is I might have to take a day or two off to let it heal. I took a look at a leg ligament chart, and it looks like its my Bursa, or my Patella Tendon.

Anybody deal with this, or have any advice.

Follow chronic tendonitis protocol:

And don't push through pain... seriously.

I hope I don't have the Chronic type :P

As far as I can remember, its only been the last few months. And I've been really lazy this winter. So like the only times I've been training is open gym (once a week) and an occasional mild training session. I really want to be able to train with everyone at the Boston jam on the 19th. Do you think if I stay off it, and us ice, Ibuprofen, and the massage, should I be ok for the jam?

Maybe.

Generally, if you push through pain after about a month or two it may become chronic

Steve, how tall are you/did you experience a major growth spurt yet? I suffered from tendonitis issues with my knees when I was about 15 playing soccer, and that year I grew about a foot. After my growth slowed, my knees became much stronger and less prone to pain. I'm not really educated in this matter, but it may just be a phase that you'll experience for a short time while your body is changing. Definitely don't push through the pain too much, though.

Jordan, I'm about 5' 10". This last summer I grew...a lot! And now that I think about it, its been happening since then. That very well might be the case. I hope it is. What I'm gonna do is probably take at least a week off. Ice it and rest. I know that you can't guarantee anything, and you're not a professional :P But I think thats the best thing I can do, don't you think? And I'm 16 bro. But I turned 16 in December.

You mean.... don't push through pain ever

That is the case in this situation at least.

Generally it's not good to do this, but I've never been one to follow this advice. Now I'm not knowledgeable on injury treatment, but the worst way to hurt the body is to not use it. So while I don't have science backing me up, stay active while you heal, just in lesser amounts.

1. Non-painful mobility is paramount to not aggravating and injury and making it worse.

2. The part you are talking about is after an acute injury you do want to keep it moving through pain so the muscles and tissues don't lock up and such but ONLY do mobility such that the pain does not get worse.

Since his injury is likely an overuse injury, the non-painful mobility applies -- he can do this. But he should absolutely NOT work through any type of pain. that's just asking for chronic worsening of injury.

So you're right in one context, but this is not the context in which you are right.

I am not trying to be a doctor, i am just suggesting a possibillity.
---------------------
I'm pretty sure it's osgood schlatter's syndrome, yet i dont know anything for sure so dont bank on anything i say.  That is what i have, and in the minor stages, it hurts slightly when you're doing physical activty right?  well the basic science behind osgood schlatter's is that when you hit a sudden growth spurt, then your bones may grow faster then your tendons, so it puts extra tention on your patella tendon, making it pul away at your upper shin, making that whle reigon hurt.  take a look at your knee and if there is a small bump in the bone below the knee cap about an inch, it could quite possibly be osgood schlatters.  I have visited many doctors about this, and they all say if you wrap something tight around the lower part of your knee, to keep the patella tendon in place (like a guitar fret is how i picture it) then you should be fine with all athletics.  But sadly, i have wrapped mine up good and tight even with the bands specially made for this, and it has beeen getting worse and now i am close to getting off of my legs completely.  so BE CAREFUL.

It could never hurt to put a patella band on the effected knee(s) and take some ibuprofien though.  Just be careful and let pain be your guide

Remember, i am no profesional, just a teen who is also 5'10" who has a story similar to yours yet further along.  so i can very easilly be wrong.

PS.  the doctors also tell you to ice it then heat it after to help with healing.  it's what i do every day for a half hour or more.

have a nice day

Just a quick update. My knee is feeling so much better. Even at the jam last weekend it was pretty good. At open gym it didn't give me trouble either.....in fact I didn't even notice it.

Thanks all for the advice.

I had about 8-9 days of solid rest. I used ice a couple times a day. I also took a lot of Ibuprofen. Seemed to heal up quite nicely :)

Ok, so I'm reviving this because the problem seemed to go away...then come back.

Judging by the picture it seems to be my upper Patellar, right where it connects to the knee cap.

I HAVE read the EMI basic tendinitis protocol, and followed it.

The pain is gone in my right knee, but now seems to be only in my left knee (which is the one I use to jump off of).

Seeing it was gone for a while but then came back, do you think I just didn't rest it enough?

I'm hoping that the case is as state by one of the posters. That it's just a growth thing (seeing as I grew 6 inches in the last year). Is this a possibility?

gonna retake a brief history...

1. Google a pic and mark where it hurts.

2. What exercises hurt? Which exercises help?

3. What type of pain is it? Burning? Ache? Tingling? Sharp?

4. Acute or chronic? What date was onset?

5. Any previous injury history?

It is quite possibly that you had a growth spurt so it needs a bit more time to heal with the exercise....

1. Google a pic and mark where it hurts.
Just feel right bellow your knee cap, where it starts to connect the the pateller.

2. What exercises hurt? Which exercises help?

Running doesn't hurt, running precisions do, along with pretty much any higher impact move (such as a failed wall up, where you fall back to the ground :P)

3. What type of pain is it? Burning? Ache? Tingling? Sharp?

Ache for sure. It's not constant, only after training, then it goes away after a day.

4. Acute or chronic? What date was onset?

It started about 4-5 months ago

5. Any previous injury history?

Nope, I've been healthy. Till that growth spurt.

Yeah, it does sound like some form of tendonitis which can definitely be exacerbated by a growth spurt.

keep on rehabbing it and stay away from high impact stuff for now if possible
