Double Front Tucks
« on: February 12, 2011, 02:48:43 PM »
At gym today I decided to just try some double front tucks on the tumble track. I got to the end, blocked for major height and went for it (yes, I just completely randomly threw it :P). All three times I tried, my brother said I do two and it looks like I attempt a third tuck. But I could never keep count of how many I did because I went too fast. He said if I were to release I could probably land it. So I tried to release after I felt was done, but I wasn't done yet ? Like, in the middle of my second tuck I released and failed pree' bad xD
How do you count when your tucks are complete?
DO you think it could've just been because I never tried these untill today and wasn't used to it ?

Yeah, it takes time to develop that extra body awareness.

I would keep drilling it messing with different release points.  It'll come eventually. I kinda would count it down. I did so many fronts i knew when when the first one was done.  So i would go one, then pace the second and just release.

Just keep doing it into a foam pit and see if u can get it.

There's a couple good tricks for this.  It's amazing how much you can lose where you are when you are going fast like that.  One way to figure it out is timing.  If you know well enough how long it takes to do a single front flip, when you are going for your double you just count it, one-two-open.  Another is not really trying to see everything and know exactly where you are but focus on the colors around you.  Gymnastic facilities use colors for this and you've probably never even noticed before.  If built right (and it'd be really dangerous if it wasn't) the ceiling will be some neutral grey or white color, and the floor will be some ridiculous blue, red, or bright yellow.  When you are doing a double flip you just have to know what color you are looking at.  If you see that bright crazy color flying by, you know it's the floor and you can count it passing you by before you know to put your feet on it.  The last way almost seems like cheating sometimes but if you have a friend who understands when you need to open the tuck to land it properly, just have them yell at you mid flip.  Tell them to yell something quick and loud (usually we just use "HUP") right before you need to open.  When you hear them, you open up and land.  After a while you'll learn how this timing feels and you won't need the yell anymore.

^ what Chad said
you can also drill 1 3/4 front tucks in a more open tuck for more awareness

I agree with above. 1 and 3/4 fronts should help.

Doubles are just a matter of getting used to the rotation, and not bailing out after the first tuck.  That'll come with practice, the only way to consistently get doubles (which I wouldn't recommend to consistently do due to the massive joint strain of them) is to practice.  Do 'em into a foam pit a gajillion times until you can do it in your sleep.  You'll know when you're ready to do them outside (which will be in a hell of a long time if you're doing them right :D)

Oh, and just food for thought, I have gotten some of my worst injuries trying doubles (both back and front). Be careful man, you only get one spine haha
