I know this is a little off topic but I had a friend do a gault vault on like a 4 foot wall.  We was just playing around but and he got seriously hurt.  We all laughed at him for a while untill we realized that he was serious.  And then we laughed at him a little more.  AT any rate...he is out of about 3 or 4 months LOL

I agree with Demon and Gear.  They aren't effective at speed and are a dead give away that you're probably lacking upper body strength.  The only time I use them is when I'm getting over an unstable fence and would prefer to not lose my balance.

actually Yak, i guess you haven't gotten to the point of being able to do them more effectivly than a turn vault to a drop. I can do a gate quicker and more fluid than i could do a turn vault to a drop. I guess i don't use gates for things above my head as nearly much as i do to drops, so i guess a gate vault on just a high wall or fence might not be as effective speed wise, but it is easier and in my opinion more fluid. Also, doing gates is not at all a dead give away that that person doesn't have any upper body strength, it just means that gates are more effective for them. I know people who do gates and are freaking monsters, but that is just the most effective way for them to overcome an obstacle. Finally, since when did parkour have anything to do with how strong and cool looking a move is? If a move is effective but not cool looking should i just not use it? I don't think lazy vaults are anything special to look at but they are effective in some cases.    I don't quite understand what you mean by going sideways when doing a gate, but when i do mine i am pretty much doing a round-off and my legs go perpendicular to the ground and over my head. Is that the sideways way you are talking about? or is it when you just kind of fling your legs over just enough to clear the obstacle?

I am sorry if i sound angry or stern, i just get kind of annoyed when somebody says a move isn't effective.

I'm with ya on that one Altimot, a gate vault may not be the most efficient way for everyone, but it doesn't have to be.  Thats why there is so much style in parkour, we all have our own preferences.  I feel that if you are good at gate vaults and can use them effectively then why not use them?  After all, if you are being chased you definitely would want to use the skills that you are best at.  Now I'm definitely not saying that gate vaults are the only way, I'm just saying that depending on who you are you may prefer them over a turn vault.  If the gate vault is done right it can be very fast and efficient (a good example is in Demons "vaults 102" video at 1:10).  Not to say that other things can't be efficient, it really just depends on your style, preferences, skills, etc. ;)  Now of course if gate vaults are all you ever work on then you should definitely try to even your skills out some, after all there are places where a turn vault would be much more efficient than a gate vault.  I'm kinda thinking that it is rather ridiculous that there is so much arguing over these small things, the arguing should probably be saved for the bigger issues like "freestyle" and whatnot, but thats for another forum.  There isn't a whole lot of effeciency difference between these two vaults most of the time, I really just believe it's a preference, and thats totally fine, after all if we all did the same things then there would be no "individual style" in parkour.  Sure parkour isn't entirely about "style" but as it is most people aren't running for their lives everyday, wow I can see that I'm getting into a very contravertial topic so I'll stop here, I think I'll start another forum about "style" and parkour, so please don't argue that in this one.
