Well I'd say the height depends on your current skill level and what goal you have in mind for your vertical jump.

Check out Sturdy Made. I believe they have instructions on how to build a vault box and other various training tools. :)

Can't comment on building, as I've never had the materials, so I'll offer advice on height instead.
Figure out your current limit for vaulting height (I'll guess chest/nipple height). Then, build the box to be *higher* than this max, say chin height. That way, you'll have "growing room" in your box, rather like buying expensive clothes whilst growing up. As you won't want to waste all the effort building something you can't vault, you'll be motivated to increase your vault power :P in addition, you'll learn the pop vault to help you in the meantime haha

not sure if I'm making sense,

Tom

I'd say waist-height. That will offer you the most variation in techniques.

At Primal we generally use 2 sizes, one is 34 inches tall and one is 42 inches tall. These offer a lot of variety for training many different vaults and other moves. Plans hopefully coming soon.

My favorite and most sturdy vault block in the arsenal is the APK 3 stack.  Three different levels all with platforms.  So much can be done and not repeated.  Heavy as gorilla shit and incredible hard to build.  Lots of lips and angles with no numbers on the blueprints.  Guess fitting wood cuts is fun.  No truck=no fit.

Coolest block is my buddy justin tang's design -  The Tang Block. its over at Lethalbeef.com.  Works off a hinge system to get super compact for Crossfit style box gyms.  Usually its 42" tall and 48" wide.  I had to make a 42"X42" to get it to fit in the back of my TJ wrangler though.  Probably best for a truck.

Most practical block is Jea Ritcheys 7 level Stackable made out of 2x6's.  Cheap.  Good plans for easy construction.  Lots of angles and cuts though so labor is about 2-3x that of the Tang Box design.  If you make extras for the top three levels and top them with the plywood platform then you can adjust the height about 1.5ft (30"-36"-42") between them.  Its on sturdymade.  This full-size will fit in a Geo Metro.

Depends on where they will go and what you want them for.  Choose wisely.

That tang vault box is awesome. That was a really ingenious the only draw back is it is basically a one trick box. I would tic tac off of it. I may not even precision to it.

If I could make a suggestion for it. I would use a bolt (rounded top kind) with a lock washer to attach the hinges. That way after repeated use there is no danger of the screws being tore out and ruining one side of your box.

The TangBox we've been using for PKC is super solid and was designed to put the stress in the right spots.  None of the screws have started to strip...yet.

There are some videos somewhere of guys blocking off them for flips out of kongs and other craziness from the loft parties. However, I don't like the fact that you cannot adjust the height for different age groups or skill levels.

Just putting a post so I can re-find this thread when I go home this summer... I'll need to build me a vault box then...

Question: How much larger should the base be than the top for stability? Or I guess at what angle should it increase?

i emailed one of the guys from sturdy made and he said he cut them at a 15˚ to fit it. get the base made and then measure out the top cause sometimes if you've already premade the top it wont fit as well.

I prefer a 3' base and 1' top, which can be about 17 degrees or 19 degrees depending on the height of the box, 34" or 42".
