"Upgrading" my Kong.
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:46:08 AM »
I have my kong down width wise on a picnic table and i can get it 65% of the time length wise. Now i am wondering how I can: Make the distance of where i leave the table and where I hit the ground longer, land on something of the same height as the table a few feet away, and are there any cool variations of the kong that i can learn? Thanks.
I do parkour in my pajamas:)
Gravity is the one obstacle we should not and never over come
For without gravity there would be no Parkour.

These both can be answered with the same reasoning. The best way to get maximum distance after you touch the table is to pop/push off of it. It requires more arm/shoulder strength than you would think. It helps if you pop off of the table before you really dive out, or if you hit the table a bit earlier than you normally would. It's tough to describe, but you really just need to try it for yourself to get the proper feel of it.

are there any cool variations of the kong that i can learn? Thanks.

Take a look at these!
Double Kong Vault
Kong to Cat
Kash Vault
360 Kong Vault?
There's also the infamous 'reverse kong,' which can be seen at 1:20 of the Damien Walters Showreel 2009.

Good luck :)

This is a supplement to Jordan's explanation of how to get the distance with a Kong:

Condition your upper body to get that "pop". Try different variations of upper-body work as seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK4XTA3XBLg

Another aspect of the Kong that will affect overall distance is the distance at which you dive for your obstacle (yes, a dive):
If you slowly progress where you take off the ground farther and farther away from the table, you're overall Kong potential will increase as well.
