Jump City: Seattle (A post they made on Facebook)
« on: January 20, 2011, 03:15:55 PM »
Quote
Jump City: While you're out jumping off walls, buildings or attempting to pull off a nice flow, check out the new Jump City: Seattle mobile site on your iphone or Android. http://m.jumpcity.g4tv.com/

This is why I think a lot of traceurs don't like parkour getting attention from the media... We aren't about "jumping off walls and buildings" at all... At least they put the "flow" in there...

I mean I know it's kind of nit-picky and they're just trying to get their ratings up, but they should respect our discipline for what it is. They don't have martial arts shows and say "While you're out ripping people's Trachea's out, killing them with pressure points, or just practicing forms, you should check out our new website" so they shouldn't treat us this way.

I dunno, maybe I'm looking into a bit to much, but my mind does things like that by itself haha

Anyone else have thoughts or have power to contact them or something?

The reason media advertises us jumping off of rooves, across rooves, and climbing to rooftops is because they want people to be interested in their show. If people see a clip of people doing vaults over rails, it will get less views and less money from the media. But when people see crazy dudes flipping off of rooves, they're hooked and want to see more, or, just want to see someone fall and hurt themselves. I hate how media represents traceurs to the world as thrill seeking teenagers too. The Tribe goes along with it though because of the MONEY, if The Tribe weren't offered any money, they probably wouldn't want to be seen as idots on rooftops. I'm sure there is going to be kids watching that show and decide that they're going to go out and try this, and out of that comes either broken bones, or death. So as much we hate media for making the world think we're adrenalin junkies, money rules the world.

Also I suggest talking to M2 or Skipper about it because they know about this whole thing better than all of us.

Yeah I commented on the post and they said "Well we're talking more about freerunning than parkour"

So I guess it's okay to  say that freerunners like jumping off of roofs... Or that fr/pk are different enough to make such a statement...

Well now that pisses me off because i'm more of a freerunner, and jumping off of stuff is NOT freerunning.

Because we have dozens of threads on the parkour vs freerunning debate, the media vs parkour debate, and the what is parkour debate, and they all conclude with no conclusion. :)

I didn't want to start a debate I just think that everyone (at least 98% of us) can conclude that jumping off of roofs is not an image that should be related to traceurs

I'm sorry if it came off that way. I just think if there's going to be a show centered around pk/fr then it should try to keep us in a good light even for it's own ratings

edit:changed "god" to "good" lol

It's all good. But yes I agree with that. We don't jump off roofs and stuff like that. :)

And yet they portray it like that... we really should take this up with M2 or something.

M2 was part of the production process I believe. No need in arguing what is already done or what not.

There is, if we can use this as an effective example so that it doesn't happen again. I know they need to make it like "EXTREEEEEEEEEEEM!!! CRAAAAZY JUMPS!! THE ULTIMATE COMPETISHUN!!!1" so that it gets people's attention, but I'd rather they work to tone it down more.

On a side note, who else is expecting an abundance of more members once this show comes out?  :P

A) I'm not getting pissed. Maybe a little worked up, but not to the point of "SANCHEZ SMASH!!!!!!!!!!"
B) I beg to differ. It affects me everytime I'm distracted because someone commands me to do a flip off the rail I'm trying hard to stay on, or the same thing happening while doing some other drill, or just when I'm walking down the hallway. I get the feeling that all these annoying little distractions would diminish if people knew what parkour really was.

On a side note, who else is expecting an abundance of more members once this show comes out?  :P

I am, but not in the large ammounts some are expecting. Some get intimidated by me just oscillating between two rails, going like "I can't do that." Take it up to notch 11, with doing double fulls from one rooftop to another, and you've got people going like "that parkour shit is crazy," and leaving it at that (I overheard a conversation, ending with this, about the MTV PKC). Some new recruits? Yes, but limited to those who get G4 and realize they can get to this point. I suppose we'll have to correct those of them who are not exactly clear on how parkour training goes...
I'm doubtful about how many of those will stumble upon the forums.
