Tips on my back tuck
« on: November 28, 2006, 11:19:24 PM »
So I finally got back tucks. This is huge for me. Why? Because about 2 years ago, I fell on my head twice and had an unbelievably strong fear of them ever since even though I have had good form on the trampoline for about a year. I just couldn't get myself to do them on normal ground until now. This is a big accomplishment for me because this has probably been the biggest mental fear block I have ever overcome.

Anyway, tonight was my 2nd night ever doing them on normal ground...well, the gym floor at least. I have some ideas of things I need to do better and I will no doubt work until they are fixed.

Does anyone have tips, suggestions, or advice so I can do them even better?

Congrats on getting 'em back. Mental blocks really suck, almost worse than injuries.
Looks like you're getting pretty good rotation. But I think the main problem with technique is head-chucking. Basically you're throwing your head back before you even leave the ground, then as a result you only get a partial tuck.

Try focusing your eyes on a spot on the wall in front of you, then keep looking at it and you jump straight up, swinging your arms, then when you feel you're almost at the apex of your jump, pull your legs up to your chest into a tight tuck. When you see the ground, start to open the tuck and you you rotate around, look for that original spot on the wall again.

Hope that helps!

good job!  like he said keep your chin in and don't throw your head back. if you throw your head back you will rotate before your center of gravity can reach is't maximum height and you will loose alot of hang time. also make shure you don't get in the habit of taking a step after you land, because it will be hard to unlearn it.

I was actually impressed that you didn't chuck your head more demon. None the less Sky Natives advice is spot on. From my perspective the main problem is just your trying to flip to early. By the time your feet leave the ground on back tuck your allready leaning backwards 15-25 degree's. Because of this there is very little rise to your back tuck, You need to focus on jumping up then flipping. Do some standing vertical jumps before each back tuck as timer. When you flip follow the head instruction sky native gave but also try to swing your arms higher jump up and then pull into the tuck quickly. You can also try flipping up on to matts to train this start with just like four inchers behind you and just keep elevating it as you get more comfortable.
I shall not fear, fear is the mind killer the little death that precedes total obliteration

I will face my fear, I will let it pass over and through me and were it is gone, I will turn the inner eye and see its path, and only I will remain.

Yeah you want to jump straight up, use your arms a little more explosively, and fully extend your legs and push out of your toes, then explosively tuck. Good start though

Arms could be straighter to make the arm extension better. Other than that, everything was already covered... wait to throw your head back until you are at the top of your jump.

It will definitely feel waaaaay late, but since you are pretty powerful and you get good height out of your jump you will basically have pretty much all the time in the world coming out the flip if you wait longer.

I rarely do backflips on flat ground.

They take more energy, thought and technique. I started them off ledges and then in my spare time threw a few on the grass for shits and giggles.

I don't see why doing them on flat is important, at all.

Dear Dr. Original,

Thank you for that completely irrelevant and useless post.

Dear Demon,

Looking good.  I had the same problem for  a loonngggg time. I landed on my head my good shares, and it took me a while. However.  Just remember to pracitce, practice, practice.  Do a few every day, and you'll start to get more and more control over them.

One thing that really helped me was concentrating on using my abs and really tucking explosively. It will add height to the jump and allow you to tuck tighter. Man I remember it took me four months or so to work up the nerve to pull one, and I know the elation of finally landing one.

Also, Unoriginal, are you intentionally posting to grind people's nerves? If so, please just leave, I stopped following the UF forums to escape people like you.

Yeah I know that you can do backflips and all I was just joking around since when you did a backflip at summerjam this summer you didn't really tuck very much.

hahaha, your sense of sarcasm is excruciating.

Though your right, and I'm sorry to say my tucking probably isn't much better now than it was then

but I've now been inspired to work on it some more, so thank you   :)
