Ok, I'm going total Paleolithic
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:33:49 PM »
After having read the last few posts from Mr. Low and others here...I've decided to go ahead and try to go 100% paleo (cold turkey: no pun intended).  From what I've been reading, this is just a given for performance related issues.  I have a freezer stocked with meats of all kinds, nuts, vegetables, organic fruit, etc.
Feel free to try and keep me pumped during my detox, and I'll let you know how going from a 40/40/20 diet to strict paleo works out.

I have quite a few lean meats in stock, but I shouldn't have any trouble going to get some fatty meats from the store.

You shouldn't get fatty meats from the store because they are not ethically raised, which is anti-paleo for many reasons. Well, unless you get meats from Whole Foods, and even then they arent ethically raised necessarily, and they are way overf#cking priced.

Time to start looking up local farmers.

Well, I live in Arkansas, so finding a local farm really shouldn't be a big issue.  It may be a few weeks before I get networked well enough to really stick to a Paleo diet, but we'll see what I can pull off.  I really haven't ever had any real issues with the diet I used for Muay Thai, but I was willing to give this a shot to see how it compared.  I know that it may take some adjustment.  Feel free to send me to any websites for paleo-planning that you know of.  More information never hurt anyone.

Lucky, I'm still working on that. Have fun on this, I'm 10 days in and don't really feel anything, except that my sleep has improved... Which is awesome.

Yeah, I can't find raw milk to save my life! I made the switch two months ago, although I've been doing 80% paleo. I feel great. No crash in between meals, and just lots and lots more energy through out the day. @Ryan, I've noticed my sleep improved as well. It was a great unexpected side effect :)

I want to go paleo but I'm from the great sheltered county of south-western CT... the closest farmish place is ~2 hours away, and I can tell you they dont produce meat.  So I dont really know how to go about doing it or whatever but yeah ima try =P

Drink pasteurized milk, which I realize is against the whole paleolithic ideals, but unless you want to end up with food poisoning...

Go to a farmer's market.  Winter is not the time to look into this.  CT should have loads of markets.  The problem is that you don't know where to look.

Once spring starts, go to the farmer's market in your town and you will find all the farmers and make connections with them.  Just google your towns name + "farmer's market"

You aren't guaranteed to get food poisoning from unpasteurized milk.  There is a risk, but there is also a risk of salmonella and other food poisoning bacteria in foods made from CAFOs including pasteurized milk, chicken, eggs, beef, etc.

It isn't likely you'll be contaminated from a pathogen in pasteurized milk, but the point against CAFOs is taken.  If Salmonella is found in pasteurized milk then either the milk was contaminated after the pasteurization process or the pasteurization was performed improperly.  While some pathogens can survive pasteurization, a large amount can't.

This raises the question of exactly how safe raw milk is for consumers.  Additionally, there is a discussion here.  And there is no scientific evidence to show that raw milk is significantly more beneficial than pasteurized, let alone worth the risk.

I thought raw milk was antibacterial?

Raw milk contains some antibacterial substances, but antibacterial does not mean all bacteria.  Certain harmful strains of E. Coli and Salmonella are immune to milk's antibiotic properties.

We've already been over this.

There's pros and cons of each.

Look in the past milk thread if you wanna discuss this

Is anyone familiar with the BCAA increase of going total Paleo for the average athlete?

Joe... Be careful if you want to see what happens if you reintroduce grains. I went two weeks on Paleo, decided to see what would happen if I tried grains again. Over the past four days, I've had mild stomach pains, mild indigestion and some trouble sleeping. I'll be starting Paleo again tomorrow. I plan on doing this again after 4 weeks. It's funny because the mild indigestion and sleep were normal for me a few weeks ago, it's funny how much I notice it now.

I would imagine that there is an increase in BCAAs when you go straight paleo.  I guess it would be very specific as to where you were getting your meat from, so really, although there might be an average increase, I don't guess that there is any way to generalize the increase.  No real question here, I'll figure it out for me personally.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure there isn't a thing as "too much BCAA" in health related terms (maybe in monetary terms).

So I'd say sup while working out if your worried, otherwise, it'll take care of itself.
