Learning to Monkey Vault
« on: November 28, 2006, 12:17:02 PM »
I've got a stalky build with short arms.  I'm tried Monkey Vaulting a few times, ended up catching my toes/feet and had to bail on the move and combat roll out.  Any suggestions on how I can master this technique?

Are you pointing your toes down? If so point them up or you'll eat it every time.

Just dive more.  By diving from farther, your hips should get higher and it should be easier that way.

Yea, ek2 is onto it, it sounds like.

Try getting your ass higher in the air, or think a/b it as getting your spine more parallel with the ground in the middle of the vault.

It doesn't have to be how much you tuck your feet, so much as it is how high up and out-of-the-way you get your rear, dig? 8)

Another think i have noticed that may help with this move is the speed you going at.

if you can put your hand flat on the ground when you are crouching (most everyone can) then you can clear without clipping just fine.

alot of parkour is just a mental barrier, so you should try to not make excuses like saying you're too 'stalky' to do it. dont mean to be harsh, but i hear alot of people make excuses when they are starting about clipping, and they are just unfounded. refine your technique and you should be fine.

on another note, when you put enough speed into it, a clip does little to nothing. anyone who has seen me run has probably seen a haphazard vault or two where i make solid contact with my feet but continue at minimal loss of speed.
keep it free and true

Try when heading toward the object you're monkeying over.
Try to do it with more speed than you usually do. Just don't do it too fast.
Make sure your arms are shoulder width apart.

Next big thing you need to do is push off as hard as you can on the object. Really thrust hard.

Once you combine the extra speed and push harder you should be able to get over it no problem.

yes make sure your shoulders are just about shoulder width because you might to what i did when i almost pwned myself...lol...my knee hit my arm and i landed on the other side of a 6 foot wall...ouch...and then the next time i overcorrected it and had them too far apart and my toes clipped...so just squat on the ground so your arms touch, make sure you are going at an alright speed, and lean forward...thats all my tips...

Personally, I was getting freaked out at the whole leaning forward bit.  It feels unnatural to dive semi-headfirst towards concrete.  Another traceur encouraged me that once I pushed off with my hands, it would naturally bring me upright again and my legs would go thru... But I was too chicken to even try it or know how it would feel.

As a result, I was doing half-assed kongs that greatly hindered both height and distance... I was just too afraid to really dive, to really put my weight forward.  I didn't believe it would really work, so I caught my feet a lot.

Then I tried something I'd heard suggested by another traceur:  practice on a king- or queen-sized bed.  There's no fear in diving towards a mattress.  Even if I bellyflop, it's not gonna hurt, right?  When the fear was eliminated and I really went for it, I found it was so true!  I pushed off with my arms and found my legs came through easily.  No wonder everyone loves this vault!  What distance!

Once I had a good sense of how it felt in a safe environment, I was more confident to really "go for it" out in the urban environment.  A solid dive really does make a difference.  And fear really will hinder you.  Don't let yourself be held back by excuses and fear.  Really!  You can do it!  We're all rootin' for ya!   :)

Here's a picture of my monkey vault, I've been doing parkour for about 2 months now, the bar is about as high as the middle area of my chest...

And 2 videos of that same vault http://s204.photobucket.com/albums/bb41/PKClout/?action=view&current=IMAG0006.flv

[NOTE] I (involuntarily) bring my legs through crooked thereby eliminating any chance of catching my feet, although, I want to work on getting my legs straight coming through, make the landing more controlled

I was practicing vaults on handrails today and pushed it too far. I was fatigued and tried to monkey over a rail that was the height of my solar plexus and clipped it with my feet.. I fell on my stomach across the rail and bashed my shin pretty good. Fortunately I didn't get hurt save for the shin.

Know your body and know your limits.  This happens to a lot of us during are first year or so of progression.  You'll know better next time eh?  Mine was a little and when I first started skateboarding the year before I started doing parkour.  I sleep on top bunk, and tried to do a jump muscle up on to it and my legs were so tired I couldn't get high enough for support and as a result I swung down and nailed both of my shins.

Oh, btw any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated ;D ;D ;D

Just remember to push off and you should be good.  Getting your feet under you just starts to come naturally.  your next step is to start doing kongs.  Have fun with that one and watch out for you knees.

I flipped over a park bench and landed on my head. It's important to keep your arms straight and push off hard enough when you jump. You'll be fine!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The first time I tried monkey I hit my shin on sucker at this photo, in the very front. It is about mid-thigh size for me but I didn't know technique :)

It is also quite damn sharp so I cut my shin (not too deep). The worst part is that after 10 minutes of screaming "ouch, damnit, I hate this ****ng parkour, belle, foucan, yamakasi, wapk, and all other <censored> things related to the <censored><censored> and im never doing this sh*t again" I tried monkey again. Needless to say, I hit my shin again. And, in about same spot :(
This time I decided to call it a day and go home :)

Ahhh, the memories 8)
