Public Reactions to training- "OMG, HOW DO YOU DO THAT " ?
« on: October 13, 2010, 05:36:35 AM »
Anyone else get this when doing small training ? I mean, I was working on getting my kong motions back, and took a couple 10 foot drops just to warm the legs up and I've recently got a few people just showing up to my practises.

I don't know, do you guys see these things as compliments ? People getting in the way ? I personally find it "Cute". I've had a few people ask me to TEACH them when I myself need to be taught the discipline. It's always nice to get compliements, but I personally seem to think that people do get in the way sometimes.

Not really a thread to go "OMG U GUIS GET PEOPLE WATCHIN' JEW " ? Rather, what do you guys feel when random people on the street just stop and talk to you ? Do you enjoy it ? Hate it ? I've actually just got a couple people to train with because of it, so it's not an all bad situation from my eyes, but still quite annoying.

First a couple 10 ft drops is not a warm up.

As for me I try not to be seen but don't care if I am. I read in a PK gens article that you should try and be silent and un-noticed because if you land and run silent then you are landing right most likely. People ask silly questions like what are you doing once I replied Running up the wall to see if we can grab the to then get back off of it. Are we being too loud? But if it gets you new people to train with then thats good. I can't wait till I have more people then just two random guys running around campus.

Just laugh em off.

I wear Vibram five-fingers all the time so I have gotten accustomed to people coming up and asking about those. The shoes get "wow i have never seen thoes!" "are they socks?" "thoes are wierd". Parkour gets things like "hey do you do Parkour?" "how do you do that?" or just strange looks.

I don't mind people asking questions. I always try to answer them so they leave with a good feeling about what I do. Not "What a nut job jumping over railings in toe shoes."

wow man yea i get this kinda thing alot recently one of my friends sent me a message on facebook reading "u must teach me parkour" qand ususally while im training cars stop and so do people just to watch and either be confused or amazed at what im doing (personally i dont care if they are confused, as long as they watch im fine with it) but i would call it a compliment to be honest and honestly as for the getting in the way thing. that might only be happening to u because it has never happened to me once maybe the people watching just dont have common sense XD

I think for most people, it's quite flattering to have people look at you and be amazed. I know it is for me! I'm not necessarily practicing to be seen and show off, but if people watch and enjoy it, so what? That's awesome! Gives me a moral boost. I've even taught my friend how to do a wall run just for the heck of it because he asked, and he got it! That was a real moral boost for me. While sometimes I feel self-conscious, other times I kind of want people to see, it makes me feel good.

Ok, so there's about 10 billion threads on "Public reaction to your training" - anyone have time to look one up? Please don't continue this discussion in this thread. Thanks.

Large difference between discussing the reactions one gets from people and how one feels about those reactions.

If you have a problem with the thread I suggest it get's locked, however I've looked and I've yet to see one similar to this concept. If you would please, like to link me to one that does discuss this I'd gladly admit I'm wrong. :).

Anyway, 10 feet is like..No damage on my knees, I like them for the bounce it gets my feet used to when I roll. It warms the ankles/legs up(Not like a stretch..More like gets them used to motion and get's them ready more after streching).

Anyway, I've come to the consensus after a little training today I hate nice comments. Not that I dont like the idea people are giving or the thought, it's more like..I don't feel like credit is deserved I suppose. I'm flattered, but when I have to stop and explain what I'm doing, then re-warm up to get back to what I'm doing etc..I don't know, it's not nice :(

How long have you been training/conditioning for parkour? Has it been 10 years or more? Even so, I can gurantee you performing 10 foot drops will always take some type of toll on your knees.
I wonder, if your warm-up drops are 10 feet, what heights are you dropping from during your workouts?

If he feels alright doing 10 feet drops for his warmup, he's more than welcome to. So long as you realize that it could have an unnoticable effect on your knees that could effect you later, and you're ok with that, go for it! I won't judge you, you know more than any of us what YOUR body can take. Obviously you have some good technique if it's not so hard. Kudos!

First off 10ft drops sounds cool i personally wouldn't do them for a warm up but I guess it depends on what surface you are landing on. Those type of moves might be the reason people come up to you. yes sometimes it gets annoying when you're training and are really trying to accomplish a new goal, but People will always seek you out if they see interest in the path you you travel. you can't control who will come see you but you can control how long they will stay.

Even though some people prefer to be on their own,  I have chosen to have a team and to help out any one who seeks help. Because it's not about Me not wanting to teach cause They could get better than me. It's about teaching them so that they can hopefully become better and I have something to aspire to, a new goal to set for myself.

(Thought) Me:"That's a far kong-cat, It's do-able. I now i can make it, I guess i'll do it another time."     Friend: "Dude I saw you checking that out are you gonna do it? You've done tougher the only difference is that there is a slightly larger drop."   Me: "I was thinking about it"  Friend: "I probably won't be able to get ot as fast as you but lets work it."

Some times because you've helped them, they see what you want and try to help you.
Love your movement and you'll never be disappointed.
