I think parkour hates me
« on: August 22, 2010, 02:58:27 AM »
Hey All,

I've been trying to seriously train in parkour for about three years now. I have spent most of that time down with injuries that will not go away. In the first six months I devolp six to eight shin splints(self diganoised. had knots multiple knots on my shin not were extremely painful) They are still there today, if I run for long or get tired they start to ache and I can run my hand down my shin and feel them. When i thought I was better from them, I started training again. This time my knees gave out. My right knee got extremely sore and kinda felt like it was packed with glass. It was difficult to walk, so I quit all training(gym, running, everything) for six months. I got better but every time I try to run, precision, ect. it comes back. I have what feels like a line the diameter of a pencil of scar tissue(?) at the bottom of my knee in the cartilidge. Any thoughts? Both are worse during wet weather, which makes me feel like an old man...Lol. ..

Thanks

The fact that you're counting shin splints is a good sign that you probably shouldn't be diagnosing yourself
Nobody should really, but especially somebody that counts shin splints

Shin splints can be a biomechanical thing (flat feet/tight muscles for example can lead to excessive strain on the shin and make you predisposed to them)
They can be an overuse thing (too much, too quickly leads to tendonitis)
In either case, RICE method should take care of the symptoms
But you need to focus on prevention
That means strengthening the foot, ankle, the muscles of the shin, and working to improve flexibility in the calves
It also means increasing your training volume gradually
Taking a few weeks off from training because of shin splints and then jumping right back into what you used to do the day you come back is just asking for them to reoccur

Definitely see a doctor about your knee
