Question about gloves...
« on: August 06, 2010, 12:08:38 PM »
I wouldn't always use gloves, but the winters get a little bit cold here, and I don't particularly want frost bite on my hands. So I was wondering if there could be some warm fingerless gloves (so I can still get some feel on the environment), but also match my all parkour designing wardrobe. Are there any any really amazing fingerless gloves with an apk design or any design that resembles parkour in general that I can order from online? No stores here sell such things.  :(

There are allot of stores that sell gloves like that. Not with parkour logo’s but I doubt you will find those. So many people in the community are againsed using gloves so I doubt you will find any gloves with parkour pictures or logo’s on them, but I may be wrong. If you are looking for function check out Wal-Mart, and any store that would sell work gloves or car mechanic gloves. You can even check out the bike stores as some bike gloves work well.

I wear gloves. I am in college and taking a ton of credits so while I am in school I am not able to practice every day. It is usually once a week and I make it count. I go out for hours on that one day, the problem is because I am not using then my callouses they go away during the week and I get blisters like crazy. The blisters are gone by the next time I go train, and I get all new ones. So I wear fingerless gloves now.

I use leather fingerless gloves that you get around work gloves, they are not too thick but its good strong leather and I have used them in the winter time here in Idaho and they worked well. There are many fingerless car mechanic gloves and bike gloves too. Just look and see what you like.

There is good reason why the community is very anti glove.

The number one issues is safty.
If your making a big jump or sometimes even small ones sometimes.  The gloves will move when you first grasp an object. Opon this happing the contact patches on the gloves will give way and slip on the surface your tring to grap causing an instantinous lack of grip.  Now wile at small levels this is just superficial and anoying at large level where there are certain excepted risks it can be deadly.

So when your praticing on gloves winter or not remember this.  Also the Inuates of North America when they are doing ANYTHING that need grip they take off their gloves and mittens in like 30 below weather sometimes lower.  Not saying you should do this just that the human body is amazing and can do anything at least in moderation.

I severely love your explanation and I am well aware of the risks. But if I ever happen to accidentally get my hand stuck to frozen metal again (yeah, turns out more than just your tongue can get stuck) and lose a few days of practice due to healing time, I won't be too much of a happy camper.

Never said not to use gloves in the winter.  Just have to change some things as well as the level and watch the weather channel.  ;)  And when it is that cold wear it on your fingers to.  Or just get a chalk bag or something to cut the amount of moisture in your hands which is what gets frozen to the rail.  But I would say gloves when its that cold.

I feel the same way about traceurs wearing gloves as I do about people using a pad on a barbell when they squat

the topic was not about wearing gloves for pain reasons it was because of the cold.

There actually is a parkour glove designed for parkour with a symbol of a traceur kn it... Ithink it's call precision and the company is like fluescent  I think. I personally don't use gloves that much  but if I do it's cause I have a cut or just to wear em sometimes but I only were one cuz the ones I have are reeaaaly sticky sl I just wear it on my right because that's my weaker hand

Point is Gloves should never be worn when temperature isn't a factor.  No mater how good the grip in the glove their can be slippage.  Its why climbers don't use gloves and use chalk instead.

Grippy gloves are just as bad because your hands will slip inside the glove causing the girp of the glove to give way and lose traction on the object causing you to fall.

Best thing you can do is build up your tolerance to rough surfaces.

Gloves should ONLY be used in cold or scorching hot weather where your skin will either blister or freeze.

Humid shouldn't effect it but if the ground is hot enough to cook eggs then well it would be smart.  There is a simple thing to get your hands used to kongs and etc Lawman.  Do 100 pop vaults and after your on top get down by lowering your self into a cat WITH OUT touching the ground first.  You will thank me later but hate me right after.  By the end of this your hands will look like hamburger.  This is not just a pop vault / cat drill its a callous building drill.
