There's your problem! Don't EVER wait til you see the ground to open on a front. A front flip is supposed to have a "blind landing" - meaning you don't see the ground until you...well...land. This is true even on large fronts. Instead of opening when you see the ground, try opening when you see slightly above the horizon.
Certain front flip techniques also help when coming off height - such as piking instead of tucking. You'll notice that Ryan Doyle pikes pretty hard on a lot of his higher fronts. This allows you to adjust your legs for the landing without over rotating.
I'd also recommend getting comfortable off a lower height before going form 10 feet. Even on mats that's a bit high and an over-rotation can lead to a broken neck or back pretty easily.
