advanced front flips
« on: August 03, 2010, 12:59:37 PM »
I.E. the Swan front and high front off of stuff I preformed my first 10 foot front in the gym on a nice comfy 4 inch crash and well it went ok first over rotation then i dialed it back from there and started to get it right but What i would like to know is this.

When doing swan front and high front how do you know exactly when to open up? without failure it seems if you open when you see the ground that leads to an over rotation so when do you open up?  all ideas and ways you all do it will be much help for me to make my own way.

thank you

There's your problem! Don't EVER wait til you see the ground to open on a front. A front flip is supposed to have a "blind landing" - meaning you don't see the ground until you...well...land. This is true even on large fronts. Instead of opening when you see the ground, try opening when you see slightly above the horizon.

Certain front flip techniques also help when coming off height - such as piking instead of tucking. You'll notice that Ryan Doyle pikes pretty hard on a lot of his higher fronts. This allows you to adjust your legs for the landing without over rotating.

I'd also recommend getting comfortable off a lower height before going form 10 feet. Even on mats that's a bit high and an over-rotation can lead to a broken neck or back pretty easily.
