Regardless of what you think, there are a fair amount of people who think the opposite.

That's not what the Yamakasi say. They say it's all the same thing and to stop worrying about titles or trying to differentiate the two and just move. We all move. We all train the same things. Why do their have to be two different titles? L'art du dèplacement is the original name, later changed to parkour, and later changed to freerunning to introduce the concept to America. Regardless of what you call it its the same thing. I have no clue why people argue this anymore. The FOUNDERS of parkour say its the same thing. So why do people say that they are wrong when they created the discipline? It's a pointless debate when time is better spent learning that new move your trying to get.

No. We do not "all train the same things." Everyone has a different reason for training.

If parkour is not solely used for escape or to reach an objective, then I have been horribly misguided and don't train for parkour.

they are the same but at the same time different Jacob.

if you did parkour and someone saw you and was like "do a backflip" and you told them you don't do backflips, they respond "is that because you suck at it?" then its easier to say no i do parkour not free running.

it makes it easier to explain to people who don't understand.

like evan i train to get from one place to another, with out all the flash.

You don't necessarily have to differentiate the two. Whether you can do a backflip or not, it doesn't mean you suck. People like that are just ignorant and you should just ignore them anyways. If there was one name for it, there would be a lot less confusion from beginners. People train for different reasons. You and Evan train for a more practical approach. Others may train because its fun. It doesn't matter why you train, the most important thing is that you do.

Then if what you do is parkour, I don't train parkour.

how is it less confusing for beginners?    If someone wants to learn i tell them its free running,   when they see someone actually doing free running they're going to be really confused and angry when someone tells them that they are doing parkour, or when someone tries to explain the difference to them,

That would make parkour's definition;

"A training methodology in which the practitioner, a 'traceur' or 'traceuse' creates a goal and definition to achieve for him/herself through movement."

That's exactly what I'm talking about. A lot of confusion exist like that because parkour and freerunning were presented as different things. If your explaining what freerunning is a lot of the time you just say it's parkour combined with flips. I really don't want this to turn into a "flips are not parkour" debate. I wasn't trying to do that. I was just trying to get people to stop debating this subject. It has been dragged on for far too long.

That would make parkour's definition;

"A training methodology in which the practitioner, a 'traceur' or 'traceuse' creates a goal and definition to achieve for him/herself through movement."

Is that not what we all try to do? Do we not use parkour to get over fear, become more confident in ourselves, or generally just improve ourselves? Everyone started training for different reasons. Whether they were like "I want to be able to do what that guy did!" or "This looks like a extremely good workout" or any number of things, parkour is a means for you to achieve those things. So parkour to me is exactly that definition that you put up there.

Then that's your definition. Not mine.

Well that's fine with me. Like I said not everyone's reason for training is the same, therefore, people's definitions will vary too.

I believe we need to have another community wide discussion on the definition... again... ;D

Maybe, but I don't know if it would do anything. Everyone is going to have a different opinion, so it's very hard to please everyone.

The community should have a definition as adaptable as it's discipline.

Then you would need a multitude of definitions to fit everybody. At that point the definition becomes too confusing for any newcomer to understand what it is about. I think the definition of parkour is fine how it is currently. At some point in your training I think people discover their own definition of parkour.

Do you have an idea when that point is? I'd really like to know.
