If grabbing your knees helps out then do it. Its basically up to you at that point. I find it easier to grab my knees, but I would say its more preference than anything.

Wait, wait, wait, wait. Why look up? That is just going to mess up your flip. Your body will follow the way your spine is positioned. So if you look up thats going to do no good for your front flips. For backflips possibly, but you really shouldn't do that. Also you ruin the ball shape you are trying to get so you rotate faster. Don't look up. That's my advice.

the biggest thing is your jump. you rotate pretty quick. You gotta Jump UP first. then tuck as tight as possible. Throw ur arms up as u jump and nearly look up. if you do this in the right order you'll have much better success.

Are you talking about backflips?

That's what I thought, but recently I heard it in a tutorial, and now I was told by Saved4Life... ???

Looking up is a technique you can use to teach yourself to avoid the bad habit of throwing your head down, which means not jumping up. In reality, once you understand the movement, you don't look up. But if you find that your instinct is to throw your head down too soon, not getting enough height for your rotation, then you might try looking upward at a 45 degree angle to ensure that you're traveling in that upward direction first.

It's true, your body has the tendency of following your spine. So, if you're looking up, you're less likely to flip down, which is everybody's problem.

So in short, if can help you. If, however, you're already jumping upwards, you probably don't need it. Its a very small difference.

Good luck.

Thanks for the explanation. So if I try this looking up technique, I look slighty up, but only until I feel as if I'm "up"?

Whatever it takes to get your body traveling upward [i[before[/i] you begin rotating.

The best thing to do is tape yourself, so you can visibly see. Sometimes what we think our body is doing, it actually isn't. Then you'll be able to recognize how much more height you're capable of getting, or if your problem is something different, like a loose tuck or bad timing on the opening.

Use whatever tricks you can to fix the habits holding you back. That's what this is about.

I could not figure out.. for the life of me, why you had to keep putting your hat back on after every flip, when it only flew off every time.
