Front Flips. Do I Have Them?
« on: July 15, 2010, 05:14:15 PM »
So all weekend I was working on my front flips on a matress. I landed them by the end of the weekend. Then I tried them off a platform. WITH shoes, it's more sloppy. I went to an Overlook at Indiana and flipped without shoes and got it. Went down two platforms. Was gonna go for more but wasn't in the mood >.<
Should I now try flat ground flips? Should I wear shoes? Should I try to just still do the platform flips, but with shoes, try to perfect those? What?

Here's a video to show somewhat of how I'm doing (I didn't get the overview clips into a video yet):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MARQI0c3QPE

P.S.
I'm the first person you see that fails in the opening xD The one that trys most flips :P My step-brother is also in there though.

It looked like it to me that you had everything but blocking. Look up blocking on youtube or somewhere and try that. Most of the time it looked like you were jumping and landing with you body in front of you feet. You want to land with you feet ahead of you body then jump up. That's basically blocking.

Alrighty, thanks :)
Should I try on flat ground? Or wait till I go back to where I was (my mom's house) and then try it there on the matress?
Thanks again, for all the help :)
Video seemed like it will help... A WHOLE lot :)

the mattress is over-rated; if you land on your back and get the wind knocked out of you, don't land on your back the next time.

Now I wouldn't say that. A mattress is good for beginners learning how to flip. It gives them a safety net so they don't get hurt.

Not to mention the mattress will absorb a lot of the shock of shorting front flips. You feet slamming the ground repeatedly like that can be brutal on the knees and the rest of the body. I say keep it.

But yes, blocking. Keep your approach jump as low as possible, but not too short. The higher your approach jump is, the more energy you fall with and the more energy you need to redirect back upward again when you explode up for the flip. Also remember to explode up with your whole body, don't swing down with your arms or torso. You can go up in an arcing motion, almost like a high dive roll. Tuck just at the peak of the jump. Land. Try not to over rotate.

hey man i would say keep the mattress for now, but start flipping from the ground onto the mattress. that way u can get used to going off the ground and not using the spring of the mattress. also try and jump a little higher, it'll help u to land them better. good luck

I could not figure out.. for the life of me, why you had to keep putting your hat back on after every flip, when it only flew off every time.

i would say just to do it without the matris because in my opinion it doesnt really help cushion the fall that much

the biggest thing is your jump. you rotate pretty quick. You gotta Jump UP first. then tuck as tight as possible. Throw ur arms up as u jump and nearly look up. if you do this in the right order you'll have much better success.

I've been watching a couple of front flip tutorials lately and I noticed what you said. But I don't get it. Looking up? If you look up won't chances be, for most people, aparently not those who can already do it :P, that it like... Contridicts (sorry about soelling :/) your movement? Looking up when you should bring your head to your chest?
Either way I'll try it out, ASAP :) Thanks :)

The biggest thing isn't the jump. It's definitely the rotation. I've seen people barely jump up and still do front flips. I would say rotation is the biggest thing. That's the most important part.

Alright, so rotation. Rotation is caused by the tuck of the knees, held by the hands... Correct? :D (I'm trying to also KNOW what I'm doing, instead of just being able to do it >.<)

Rotation is caused by the movement of the chest to knees in a front flip. For backflips it would be brought on by the knees. Also use your arms for added rotation.
