Lets go to Maui discussion

I wanted to make a thread specifically dedicated to a HIPK trip to Maui sometime for this summer 2010.  Basically anyone who has time/can afford it please join in.  I'll be roughing it as much as possible to save money, so if that doesn't sound like something you wanna do then this might not be the trip for you.  I'm planning on 3-5 days depending on what people can afford and how much free time most people have.  It might not be PK specifically oriented, but I guess it could go under the category of a physically challenging vacation.

My post, I'm going because its something I've wanted to do for a long time...meet gregg, shilo and the other guys of Maui HIPK.  And I've never had a chance to explore maui.  The best time for me to go would be beginning or end of July or late June. 

Best price I could find for round trip tickets was $128 on Go....but I'd pay the $20 more for Hawaiian just cause I've had horrible experiences with Go in the past. 

I wanna train with Gregg and the maui gang up there....camp on the beach, find some good trails to run/explore, do some diving, eat good food...idk could you ask for more?

Yikes! Does this happen often?


I never considered camping on the beach when I went there before, but it does sound interesting. I'd be worried about someone stealing your stuff when you wern't around, but maybe that's just cause here on the mainland, it would all be gone 1/2 hour after you walked away.

I doubt I'd be able to make this event, however. :'(

There are frequently big fires on Maui. Most of them are controlled cane burnings. These other ones happen about once a year. Last was in same area, about 6 months ago.

Maui's just a bit bigger than Oahu, with about 1/10 the people. It's less built up/ developed.
Plenty area I have never explored. Maui's newer, less eroded. Haleakala is 10023'.

Ryan said he was interested in abandoned places. There are a couple areas that were population centers during plantation days that are now deserted, plus small WW2 and older sites.

hurray for abandoned structures.  um hey gregg...do you have camping gear we could borrow while up there?  Or should I bring my own?  I was thinking of just bringing one of those one person mini tents that are somewhat portable. 

Also could you recommend a good place to go pick up some groceries that's near by the airport?

There's a CostCo before the first major intersection ;D
Else, within 2.5 miles...
Walmart, Safeway, [Star closed?] for mainland chains

Down to Earth [can be pricey, good hot and cold food bar tho], or Whole Foods for health food [aint been there - heard it's pricey]

Ah Fooks has stuff you might not find anywhere else. I haven't been there since fire 3 yr ago.
Paradise Philipino market...

Camping stuff... my tent is on mainland? I'm not seeing it.

thanks gregg...I'm thinking as far as dates go, late july to early august is the target range. 

Do weekends or week days work better for you?

 Dont worry about modifying anything.. If I cant hang its my fault.  I'm sure I can find something else to do.  But Im pretty sure by those dates I should be around 75%.  Able to do most of the activities just back of the pack

Derek - actually better to have you be at front, setting pace. Others can hang back, try extra tricks, whatever... because they can catch up.

  Hmmm... Im starting to second guess myself..   Im not much of a parkour guy, I just like to play around... But i dont think i will be able to any parkour, just some jogging around with my camera and witnessing on the fun.   But having people wait around for me while I "catch up" really hurts my Alpha pride. I dont like that thought.
   
      It would be cool if an itinerary is put up. So that I can know what I will be able to participate in.

   I'm still flying over there, I need to see more of the islands before I move.  If I cant hang then ill probably just go on my own one legged adventures

That's why I have injured people, camera op, etc be the pace setters if the goal is to have fun as a group. Nobody gets left behind, nobody has to catch up. The pace is more constant, breaks are shorter, bla bla bla.

Right now, you are the pace setter. I know you like to dive and take photos. Sightseeing, of course...
Combine that with Ryan camp, explore trails, dive, eat good food, explore abandoned places...

I've got a new copy of "Maui Revealed" and will make a list of suggestions...

i am so disappointed that i'm going to miss this. I leave on july 6th and get back on the 28th. I am going to try and train with san diego parkour. has anyone trained with them before?

Ozzi bday = July 20. Tuesday?
Ryan listed the week, not the weekend. The weekends are still mostly free on either side.
Jesse - bummed you won't be here. I've only trained with a couple guys from BAPK, not San Diego.
