The Roll Polls
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:42:52 PM »
Here is the first Roll Poll:
Can you roll comfortably and naturally on concrete?

I haven't gotten really far with my roll, personally. It's been three months for me and I still hit my shoulder a good amount of the time.

So here is the second Roll Poll:
How long did it take you to perfect your roll? If you haven't, how long have you been training?

I'm becoming discouraged about my roll which is making me discouraged about parkour in general. Now, answer the Roll Poll!
Seriously though - your input is appreciated.

i learned to roll from kung fu, and just adapted it to my pk needs. it took me about a month of training to get it comfortable on any surface. just do it often, if you're jogging or running just break into a roll and keep going. that'll get you used to it. just my opinion and the way i trained for rolling. i'm sure others have gone about it differently.

Yes.

It took me 1 year to perfect, I've been training 2 1/2 years.

1. Hurts to roll on concrete still

2. Took about 2 months to get the hang of it (did rolls for at least 10 minutes everyday), which then I thought I got it, but now my rolls are so sloppy due to lack of practice on them. So I say still working on them, haha

Well, I've been at parkour for about a week now.  I don't wanna try rolling on concrete, but I have tried on a harder floor.

After reading through this, its kinda like... Rolling is such a fundamental principle, yet takes awhile to master... So at what point could I really call myself a traceur and say "Yeah, I do parkour" without seeming like a complete noob (which at this stage of the game, I don't have a ton of experience yet).

You'll learn at your own pace, so there's no exact point in which you just go from noob to non-noob. I've been doing parkour for about 6-7 months now and I still consider myself a noob, just a more experienced one. lol

I can roll on concrete, but i prefer not to because I used to hit my head a lot when I practiced on grass and i don't wanna make the same mistake on concrete. And I am still perfecting my roll.

Sometimes I can roll on concrete with no problem and other times I can't. All depends on the day I guess. It seems to be more that I can roll on concrete without pain than otherwise.

Definitely haven't perfected it...yet. I've been training for a 1 year and 2 months.

One of the most fundamental things seems to take so long to master...

It seems like early on... You can do things others can.  Like vaulting over certain things; you're not really separated. But I guess learning safety sets you apart.

After reading and seeing that even after a year might not be long enough to feel comfortable with rolling on concrete, how am I gonna take certain jumps then? Just land properly? I know you're supposed to do what you're comfortable with and step out a little on progressing.

Yes, just land on all four. The roll doesn't help with landing unless you have forward momentum, and it's mainly for preserving that momentum.

But for higher drops (which I'm not ready for yet) or to keep my momentum going, I'd need to work on my rolling...

Yep. If you progress on a normal rate, you'll have your roll down at the same time when you're ready to drop big heights, or worry about preserving that much momentum after a small drop. :)

Finally, yes. From any sort of drop or momentum....well, I'm still a little scared of that.

How long did it take you to perfect your roll? If you haven't, how long have you been training?

It's taken me about a year, but IMO it's been the last month or so of really analyzing and working on my rolls that did it for me. I've been training for a little more than a year and a half now.

I've been able to roll comfortably on concrete for a while now, but it's not being able to do it on concrete that makes it perfect. The little details like which foot you come out on, how fast your "turn-over" is, if you can continue at your normal running pace out of and into a roll. Ever since I first really started training, which was a year ago I've been working on rolls. IMO there will never be anyone who can "perfect" a roll, instead focus on getting as near to perfection as possible.

This video really helped me...

1.  Not perfect, but a start.

2. You're never done perfecting the roll!  Keep on going!

Also the link posted is absolutely amazing.  That helped me progress to concrete because I suddenly knew what my problems were and how to fix them.
