Working up to a Pull-up > Muscle up
« on: May 08, 2010, 08:31:57 AM »
I'm a fresh new face in parkour and am not really in shape. One of my first goals is to be able to do a pull-up, then a muscle up, yes, I cannot do a single pull-up. This is because I want to be able to climb up ledges when I grab them.

What i'm asking is how can I train to work up to a pull up? Since I can't do one, it doesn't really make sense to start with a bar, should I try jumping?

Note that I do not have access to anything sophisticated like a pull-up assist machine.

-Look into kipping pullups.

-You could also consider doing some squat jumps to a pullup. Forget what they're called, but the momentum helped me a bit and I felt like I was getting two workouts in one.

-A lot of people stress doing negatives.

-Inverted bodyweight rows would probably help.

-Can you do a chinup?

That's just a few suggestions. There is a TON of info on this already. Just type "pullup" in the search bar and you'll have more info than you can handle.

As for the tricep part, do dips.

Sorry about that, but I just really want to conquer this wall that I can manage to grab, but can't pull myself up :/

Any tips specifically for getting up walls?

If your holding on the wall, pull your legs to your chest and use your legs to help push you up

Well if you're not strong enough to do a pull up, this is going to be a tad hard. If there is an opposite side of the wall you can grab, that may make it easier. You also could use your forearms to help pull you up. Or maybe a better wall run..?
This post was based off of my personal gatherings. Enjoy:)
