Floating ribs
« on: April 26, 2010, 06:14:20 AM »
Date of Injury:   04/25/10
Time of injury (0:00 to 23:59): 18:30ish
Your DOB and age: 04/19/1972 - 38 years old.
name (remember this is the internet, name is helpful but not mandatory):Todd Soulliard
City, State: Harrisburg, PA
# years practicing Parkour / Freerunning:  14 months
Hours of training per week. (real, not what you'd like to do):6-8 hours per week
Other exercise / fitness experience:  30 years of skateboarding, 12 years of martial arts (Isshin-Ryu, Pai-Lum Kung-Fu, Yamate-Ryu Aikijutsu)
Location where injury occurred:  HACC Mid-town campus
Conditions of location (wet, dark, icy, etc):  conditions were fine, everything was lighted and dry.
What you were doing / trying to do when injury occurred?:  tac-vault from wall over railing, hand missed the railing and I landed on my side on the rail.
Where any other people involved?: Myself and 5 others in our group were there running drills.
Part of body  - description of injury, rating of severity 1-10.  Right side, bottom of the ribcage, front to back.  Severity:9 initially, took my breath away, thought I was dying.  Subsided to a 7 after an hour, today it's a 5.
Did you see a doctor for diagnosis? Not yet, if it persists or worsens, I'll go right away.
Did you get X-rays or MRI's?No
Picture of the injury: No visible signs of injury, no picture.
Could you / how could you have avoided the injury?:  very easily.  If I would've gone for my hand placement before the tac, rather than tac and hope my hand makes it, I'd be fine.
Date / type / severity of your last injury?:   First real parkour injury
Notes on the experience? It was a stupid injury that could've been avoided with some forethought.  Don't just go for it, without thinking it through.

Keeping my ribs wrapped up and taking 1000mg ibuprofen every 6 hours.  Pain has subsided for the most part.  Finally able to sleep through the night and tie my shoelaces.  I'm estimating a 6 week recovery before I get back to full duty.  Meanwhile I'm doing what I can to condition, Dogen's titanium ankles, etc.

On a side note, hindsight being 20/20 and all, I've picked up a few things from this catastrophe.  First, I was getting cocky, I should've recognized it and taken a step back.  Second, I did a technique in an entirely different way than I was used to, and did it without any real thought at all. I'm not even sure when or how I decided to do it, it almost just kind of happened.  My focus must've been way off.  And lastly, and this is the silver lining in the cloud, but I feel that it could've or possibly even would've been much worse if it wasn't for the years of conditioning and taking hits from martial arts, and the 30 years of slamming super hard on vert and street from skateboarding.  The body truly is an amazing thing.  I can't wait to get back to training.

Hi Todd.. I think you should see a doctor. Broken ribs is a pain and you need expert attention and not just pain reliever and first aid.

Thanks.  It's been some time since this happened, I'm back at 100% probably since the beginning of June.  Hopefully I can avoid another incident like this, but if it does happen, I will see a doctor.
