Style comparison
« on: March 21, 2010, 08:12:20 AM »
So as I watch more and more Videos i notice two general styles of rolling. In one, the traceur goes into a long almost ovoid shape and kind of pops up and out of it and in the other the traceur is in a more circular shaped and kind of has a rolling flow out of it. I'm kind of somewhere in between, I've noticed experienced traceurs (and freerunners) such as Danny and David and Levi do both on occasion so the long and short of it is: which if either are better or more "correct" in terms of longevity?

I've noticed this too. At high drops you don't have time to go into a perfect roll so a more sideways, 'ovoid' roll is better at that distance, and they put less impact on your major body parts. So I think they're better even though my roll is very forward.

yeah but when i go more sideways it really seems to put a lot of impact on my shoulder directly on to the bone vs going through muscle first.

When I don't have a lot of forward momentum, I roll a little more sideways. I don't know if this is technically correct but it seems to work better for me.

same, i find it easier to transition smoother onto my side than upper back or shoulder at a lower speed.

Neither are better, they're just adaptations of the roll in different situations.
these are my thoughts-

The smooth 'flow' kinda roll is usually performed with less forward momentum. When you're doing a straight drop.

The 'long, ovoid' roll as you described it is used with a lot of forward momentum, unless some of the momentum is stalled as you land.

Well, it took me half a year to get my roll right, so just try not to roll on parts that hurt you. That's how it worked for me!
