Embarrassed and Doubtful
« on: March 04, 2010, 02:23:20 PM »
Today I found a great place to practice...but ended up not practicing. You see, I can't drive and hopping out of my moms car to go do parkour on a playground just seems embarrassing. Not to mention, I doubt my skills and feel like anybody can do what I'm doing. I have been practicing for a month now, and I feel like I've gotten nowhere. And it doesn't help that my parents laugh at me...

Advice please? And yes I know how lame this sounds.

idk man people may laugh and speak but you dont have to listen, also you dont have a car but you have legs i'm assuming so you could find a different spot that you could walk/run to not only would that be a place where no one else would be your rents wouldnt be there to give you a hard time either.

People laughed at me once. So I moved down to a creek a  quarter mile away. They followed, so I hid.

Then they came and found me, said I was on THEIR property, and stole my watch. (Mind you, it was about 60 bucks)

Those assholes have kept me motivated for more than a year now.  We as Traceurs practice to better ourselves. Think of this event every time you don't feel like practicing. Stay safe, become the best you can be dude.

That's why I asked ;D sucks for you dude, even though you shouldn't have been on their property.

Sorry for going off topic. @ OP: How far away is that park?
When it comes to embarrassment, it usually only lasts for as long as your technique doesn't look fluid or solid (call it noobish if you want :P). My brother used to make fun of me trying to "imitate" those youtube videos, now he's speechless when I do a diving kong. :)

I wasn't on their "property." This is suburbia, I was in the middle of a forest.

I wish I could find a place to walk to. The nearest place that has any sort of useful obstacle is about five miles away. And that place isn't too great. My next place is a good ten miles away, which is actually very good.   :-\

@ Hazim: Around twenty miles away. But yeah, that's kinda how I feel...I feel like people are just gonna see me as a kid randomly jumping around. I guess with more practice, I'll feel better. Everything just feels choppy and rough, if you know what I mean. Like, brief pause before vault, brief pause before jump and land, etc.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.  :D I seriously lack self confidence.  :(

That's EXACTLY how I was. Is there any kind of PK community in your area? Train with a few people. Get friends involved.

It's kinda funny, actually. In the summer I would train every day after school at a local elementary school. The after school teachers would always cautiously watch me, but didn't tell me to leave. As I got better and better, they stopped watching and actually started to smile and enjoy the show. A couple of little kids actually came up to me and asked what I was doing :P

Ma bad. :P one day you'll be rewarded.

Yeah! WITH A KICK TO THEIR A -- dang, I'm a very mad person :D

LOL, I meant to put Hazim on the @ thingy, I got confused, but anyway...

Yeah, around 3 hours away in Indianapolis. Sadly, I can't find anybody to train with. I thought I'd got one of my friends into it, but he lost interest on day two.

Hm. I've made a point to go to the elementary school playgrounds hours after school is out. Especially since my dad has to come with me...dang overprotective parents.

I had people do that too. xD
First place I trained was at the local Elementary school.
They had a big brick wall i'd practice my wall-run on until I had it down to where I could get up to it every time with minimum pain. Took me about a month.

Then I moved to a playground where I practiced vaulting over picnic tables and bike racks.
I definitely got some odd looks while doing that.

By that time, I got what I consider "Parkour-Vision"! >D
Lame name, I know.
But that's pretty much where you see things as they weren't originally intended to be seen.
You see a rail, but it's not a rail. It's a step for you to climb up or vault over.
A wall isn't a wall; it's a really steep floor!
You get to the point where anything you see, no matter where you are, is something you can train on. :D

Even something as small as a tree stump.

As for the embarrassment factor; don't even worry about it man.
If it's people laughing at you that bothers you, don't pay them any mind.

When I wanted to shut people up, I scared 'em a bit. :]
Nothing like a jump from a high height (yet safe if you know what you're doing) and a perfectly executed roll to freak some people out, eh?

With training comes more solid technique. With more solid technique comes less embarrassment. With less embarrassment comes more training!

You see what i'm getting at? I hope this made sense.. xD

If all else fails, use your backyard. :]
And try to see everything as something you can implement into your training.

Oh, that reminds when, when I do a wall run, I get severe pain in the back of my heel that stays with me for days.  :-\

What's mainly keeping me from reaching my full potential is having to have my parents take me everywhere.

Ooo, nice idea, with the jump thing.  ;)

I see what you're getting at. :D

Achilles tendon or heel?

You'll be a bit sore in the beginning, your body is just getting used to being so active.

The muscle in your ankle/foot area might not be too strong. o:I think it's the Achilles heel?
You can fix that problem by doing little foot stretches.
And they can be done anytime! Even in school!
:P
Just rotating your foot in circles.
Going from standing on your whole foot to just the balls of your feet.
Going from whole foot to heels of your feet.

:D
I recommend doing the second and third one until you feel a small burning sensation.
Let it wear off, and do it again.
:]
(This will also help you with your jumps and landings. Win win win situation? Yes! :D )
