CALLING ALL TRACEURS/TRACEUSES!!!!
« on: March 03, 2010, 04:56:26 PM »
Hey everyone. My name is Joe. I am a sophomore at the UW. For a project in one of my classes, I have to shoot a short documentary on a topic of my choice. I want to document parkour. I've trained with this group in the past and think other people would really enjoy learning about parkour, both the physical and philosophical side.
Here's the plan as of right now: my partner on the project, Vanessa, and I want to film two training sessions. With the time constraints we have in this project, we are planning to shoot both March 20th and 21st. In terms of where, I think Steenbock library and the surrounding area is pretty cool in terms of possibilities, but I'm open to suggestions. Anyone who can make it to either, or both, sessions, that would be great.
Please post a reply to this message if you think you can make it.
Hope to see everyone soon.

I hope lots of folks can make it out for this! I met Joe and Vanessa at the MBG lastnight and they are great people for this project!

Will you guys be filming next Tuesday (3/9) at the MBG also, or just the outdoor sessions on 3/20-21?

Also, I think some shots on Library Mall would be good as well, if you like; although Steenbock is a favorite spot of ours.

as though there were some obstacle in the way;
and yet: as though, once it was overcome,
she would be beyond all walking, and would fly.

The plan right now is just the training sessions on the 20-21, but I can check on the availability of the cameras and see if we can get some preliminary stuff next week.

I'm there. Whenever and wherever you need me! If we did a library mall session we could probably move to the terrace and get some cool shots. It shouldn't be too busy over there. GEF3 and Manona Terrace are great places too.

This may be a possibility for me. I will look at my openings on those days, granted my birthday is the 21st.  If i can get out there, i would love to.  I need to train outdoors.. Too much time spent inside.

Cleared my schedule, I'm in! I'm looking forward to seeing some people from last summer! @GonzO: Could you tell us what kind of equpiment you'll be shooting with?

Oh yeah Monona Terrace? I've definitely gotten the cops called there. Twice. They "DO NOT TOLERATE THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR." However I think the philosopher stones are a good place to go. Not only have we "basically" been publically invited to practice movement there, it's important to practice "art" on "art".

Really.

GEF 3 is fine with me. Really my partner and I are supposed to be as hands off as possible. Wherever you guys want is fine.

This is what we will be shooting with:

Interesting. So how are you going to tackle the overall peice? Are you going to gather thoughts from all the practitioners? Just focus on filming our movements?

O.O  ok  now i'm excited.  I thought i knew the name menona terrace.  earlier this year, my choir performed as the only high school choir at the Wisconsin Music Educator's convention. A great honor, because usually 3 of the top HS choirs in the state perform - this year, only us. i was looking for spots to train as well, and i walked right through this area along the way, looking at the endless possibilities. OMFG YES! =D

The main focus will be on the movement, but I really want to explore the philosophy behind parkour and why people do it. So we will probably take a few people or everyone (time permitting) aside and ask them what parkour means to them.

I'm gonna say no on the Monona Terrace. Right now our relationship with the city is very good. We have met with the Mayor and he is supportive of parkour, and generally law enforcement tends to be very hands-off and moderately supportive of us. It is very tenuous and I don't want to screw that up. We are in the process of developing relationships with area schools and youth programs and that is all very positive, so we need to "mind our P's and Q's" as it were.

So glad that Gavin and Keys are able to make it out, and Trevor, it's been like a million years since I've seen you! Travis and Zack from PK Squirrel are going to be there too, as well, I think. I'm guessing several more from Madison will be out; possibly also some of the folks from Chicago, but we'll see. It should be a good sized group.

Why don't we say Steenbock and Library Mall on the first day. We'll meet at Steenbock at noon on Saturday 3/20, and then go until people decide to head home. Then on Sunday we can meet at GEF 3 at noon. GEF 3 is a good spot to hit up on a Sunday because we're less likely to disturb people working in the building (and therefore less likely to be asked to leave).

So, in a nutshell:

Saturday, 3/20, starting at noon: Steenbock Library, followed by Library Mall
Sunday, 3/21, starting at noon: GEF 3 Building

see you there!
She followed slowly, taking a long time,
as though there were some obstacle in the way;
and yet: as though, once it was overcome,
she would be beyond all walking, and would fly.

OK, I checked, and unfortunately I can't get a hold of a camera for the MBG this Tuesday. The 20th and the 21st at those locations sounds perfect though. Thanks to everyone for helping us with this. It should be a lot of fun.

Definitely looking forward to seeing PK Squirrel, some of the more disciplined traceurs I've met. And it'll be good to see you too Muse. I have some dvds for you!
