yet another random seeking help
« on: February 20, 2010, 09:38:34 PM »
Greetings and salutations Apk, I have come to this website seeking help with my fitness.
To begin with I am a 13 year old male and weigh 56 Kg's.
Now, my story:

I have been getting very frustrated with my fitness level at the moment as i've tried numerous methods in the past and really none of them have work, I have overweight parents and a lazy brother with knee problems who luckily for him seems to be eternaly thin (he's 19.)

I also have a sister who is quite eager to do something about her fitness as well she's 15, she however is relying on me to find out how, I hope if I change my fitness around then my parents and brother will follow.

This is hopefully where you lot and parkour come in, I found out about parkour ages ago and have loved the look of it ever since, finally I want to try it.

let me also tell you that in NO WAY do I lack motivation, I am going to do this if I have to get however many injuries along the way!

However there are some more problems, I live in Australia and its summer time at the moment for most of the day its sitting at 30-35 degrees Celsius, I occasionally have some issues with my ankle, and I don't really have access to any gym equipment.

Now let my sum up that terrible mass of text up there  ;)
I've been having trouble with fitness in the past and have turned to parkour and you guys for help.
I don't lack motivation in any way and I want to become fit in the fastest most efficient way possible, I despise the shape I'm in now and long to change it.

I will quite happily do goddamn anything that will get me there.

Also I've read the stickies and nothing there seems to give me a straight answer, I need a workout or whatever you want to call it to get me fit Being fit is my goal, I'm not sure what a definition of that is I'm sorry.

this is probably nothing you lot haven't seen before, just a point in the right direction is all I'm asking.

Sorry for what is probably a terrible post, I was really angry why writing this, I'm so frustrated...

Thank you so so much in advance

Since you have no access to a gym and you're starting out, you might want to start with body weight exercises to go along with parkour.

I would say start with easy stuff first: pushups, pullups, crunches, etc.
Then some more advanced stuff: weighted pullups, hanging leg raises, handstands, etc.

You should also try running a mile several times a week if you can. If not, just run as far as you can.

Once you feel you are ready , you can practice simple parkour, like rolls, lazy vaults, and monkey vaults. (This is where I am right now).

I am in no way a pro or anything in parkour, so you might want advice from someone more advanced, I am just throwing out some safe ideas.

A 13 year old with that level of grammar... I'm sensing either a deception, or a mild genius, either way, the stickies are indeed your friends.

And as for being fit, it's best defined, simply as this; A state of physical being free from injuries or illness with the capacity to physically accomplish whatever you wish to do.

So basically it boils down to two things: Being healthy, and achieving your goals.

I'd suggest writing down some quantifiable goals first, then we can get back to you one what to do.

If you're as motivated as you are you should find a gym and get starting strength by mark rippetoe. In addition, you might want to try to join a gymnastics club at your school or somewhere else if you can. If you can't get that try to get a squat rack with 400 pounds of weight.

If all else fails get a pair of rings. Surely you can use those for dips/pull-ups.

Make a list of specfic goals or else we have no idea how to help you. How high do you wan to jump, how many muscle-ups do you want to do. SPECFIC GOALS

Just notate some of these exercises might be useless depending on where your fitness is right now. The lifts you do need to be intense. Doing 40 sit-ups is not intense. Doing a 10 second L-sit is more intense. Find movements applicable towards your goals. Also, one final though, do movements that focus more on the whole body rather than one part. For your program do isometrics first and then do your lifts (harder->easier).

To go along with the others here, defining very specific, achievable long and short-term goals is just about the most important and effective thing a person can do in any endeavor to self-improvement.

You could do this to help: sit down and think for a bit about what exactly you want.

Once you have an idea of what you want in the future, figure how to get there incrementally by setting short term (month or a few months) and long term (six months to a year) goals. Once you have those, sit down and write out these goals every day (preferably in the morning and night, if possible). Put them in the 1st person, present form of the verb, such as:

"I can do 15 pullups in a row  (and then put a reasonable amount of time to attain the goal as a date) by May 3rd."

Other examples could be something like:

"I run 3 miles in 20 minutes by June 1st (or however long is appropriate for you based on your fitness level now)."

"I do 100 pushups by May 18th"

Make goals like this and write them down often (daily), but don't hurt yourself mentally or physically by making the goals too challenging. If needs be, take it a bit easier and make the first few goals short, short (like 2 weeks) so you can start seeing progress and get better at goal setting.

This kind of goal setting and writing is LITERALLY a big part of what has gotten many people to be millionaires, incredible performers, and so on. Try this and see how it goes.
