"Fight Science - Stealth Fighters"
« on: February 11, 2010, 04:33:12 PM »
A new episode of Fight Science is coming on tonight at 9:00 pm EST, it's gonna be covering some parkour apparently.  The show is covering the science behind a couple of martial arts and other "stealth" based activities.  The clip of Danny Illabaca that was on the front page a couple of days ago is a clip from this episode.  Should be an interesting watch, so be sure to catch it if you can.  Here's some info on the show, http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/fight-science/4322/Overview

Interesting stuff, I hope they keep up the research even when the cameras aren't rolling though.  A lot of the tests they run on the show are groundbreaking, they're really just hitting the tip of the iceberg on human bio-mechanics.

Fight Science is also available on Hulu. My work schedule and commute means I don't get home until most shows are over. I <3 Hulu.

His landing technique requires that he do a flip in midair first? Yeah, alright.

I'd like to know the reason for that, too.

Give it a guess. I think everyone knows.

Aaah...sounds like a trick question but,

because the flipping rotation helps create an easier roll when he lands??

No, because they wanted something that would look cool for the show.

It isn't practical, but it worked.  You can't argue with the results, he put no unnecessary pressure on his joints.  You also have to keep in mind he was doing it onto 3 inches of foam padding.  The scientists and health specialist don't know what most of the people on their show are capable of until they see it.  So I'm gonna go ahead and assume the producers didn't tell them to do something that sounds potentially devastating to the athletes.  But the fact remains he reduced the force down to a very manageable fraction, nothing dangerous even in the long run.

Of course it worked, because he's skilled enough to pull it off. I didn't say anything about it being harmful. I was just saying that it was absolutely ridiculous to call it necessary.

Did they call it necessary?  I must of missed that I guess, either way I think they did parkour justice on the show.

Yes, they said "In order for Ryan to do that maneuver, he needs to complete a flip in the air..." or something near that.

But yes, I agree. They represented it well. The narrator also mentioned that they (parkour people) also focus on style.

Yeah, all in all it wasn't bad, I agree. Ilabaca's injury was weird, though, eh?
