Rails Fear
« on: February 09, 2010, 06:45:57 PM »
Like the head says I've been doing parkour for about a week now. I'm fairly comfortable with my jumps and can jump up to around a little below my chest. I'm 5'10"-5'11" but the main thing that still messes with my is rails. For the most part going under them is fine, but the different vaults I've seen going over I fear practicing because I think my feet are gonna catch. The most I can do to go over he do the usual bring your legs to the side and over.

Anyone have any tips on overcoming this fear?

You're a week into parkour, I wouldn't worry about it. You'll eventually get over your fear by continually practicing your vaults. The solution to alot of fear based problems in to just drill the mechanics of the technique over and over.

When vaulting, try not to separate your legs too much. This is a common mistake because intinctively you try to pass one leg before the other, but you have to take'em both at the same time when vaulting, And for landing on rails train balancing over them first, this way you'll know where to put your feet when landing on them.
If you want to monkey or kong over them, try to make your knees touch your chest while pulling yourself forwards, and try looking for tutorials in all these valts and learn the right way to do it, so neither your feet or your knees will catch with the rail.
And try to remember that the pain is temporary, and that these simple vaults won't get you more than some bruises and scratches if you fall, you heal fast and the goot thing is that you'll have realised that the fear made you fall, and won't fear again.

Hope these tips work for you.

Peace.

I always kinda looked at vaults as just jumping over things, with my hands added in for extra measure. So when I approached a rail the 1st time I ever tried monkey vaulting it, I just imagined myself jumping over it with feet only. So I ran at it, with this in mind, leaped up put my hands down and did it. Your hands are just a boost, they're not pulling you over you know? I also focused on the idea of keeping my knees tucked up tight, and keeping my body at a slight forward angle. Remember that in monkey vaults your feet don't actually go through your legs, when done right you just feel like you're soaring over the bar, like a tucked up superman.

Work on vaults on other surfaces for a while, then go play with rails, just do what you can eventually you'll be comfortable. It takes time, a week is nothing.

You can totally get it!!

Check out this thread for some help with fear. Honestly you can't really get that hurt vaulting a hand rail if you have pretty good reactions.

Konging low stuff is stupid. Just jump over it. Or just do a cool flip over it.

thats a really common problem, if there is a rail that is chest or so height and a wall the same height you will be more scared of the rail than the wall. just think of it this way. lets say you can do a monkey vault chest height. whether its on a rail or a small wall, that doesnt really make much of a difference. its just a different surface basically.

I've had this. Just a few days ago I learned how to overcome it.

Just practice whatever movement you're trying to make. Practice it over, and over. Repetition is the key. However, don't practice on the rail, obviously. Practice on any surface you're comfortable with. Maybe a wall near the same height. Practicing on that will improve your confidence on the movement, so it will be much more simple to perform on the rail itself. Trust me.

I'm around your size, and I had a similar problem.
It was just vaults and my feet catching the surface of the object I was vaulting that got me though.

I got over that fear by going to a picnic table.
I practiced Kong-vaults on it. The way I saw it, is if my feet caught the front edge, the most that would happen is i'd hurt my knees on the table-top a bit. If my toes caught the table-top, my momentum would stop and my arms would keep me from going any farther.

Maybe it just makes sense to me.. I may not be explaining it well..

As someone already said, you won't get any injury that's too bad from vaults like this. Unless this rail borders a two-story ledge or something of the sort..

I had the same problem

This is going to sound funny to you, but I actually had more mishaps due to the progressive building towards making it over. When instead, I decided to just go for broke, I was making it over every time with no issues.

Now I look back and can't remember the last time I felt fear of doing a lazy or turn vault over a rail. I still have some challenges to overcome, but that's all part of the process

On every progression of your training, there will be new things you will try, and each time you'll be afraid. Just don't let it stop you
