Healthy school lunch ideas
« on: January 29, 2010, 09:13:19 AM »
im a girl trying to build muscle for parkour,so i was trying to come up with some healthy things to eat for lunch at school since as most  you know, middle school lunches arent the healthiest things to eat. (seriously! how am i supposed to stay thin when the SALADS use iceberg lettuce and fried chicken?!) i almost always bring a lunch unless i forget it or something, but turkey sandwhiches are starting to get old. do any of you have any recipes or ideas that i cud make for luch?(preferably ones that have at least one serving of every food group)

Whatever you're having for dinner make enough for it for the next day at school.

Hopefully there's a microwave at school if you need it.

unfortunately, there isnt a microwave i cud use.  :( besides that, everything that we usually eat for dinner has a bunch of rice/bread/grains/etc. (which is usually why i wait until dinner to eat most of the carbs i need for that day) and most of what we make either needs to be reheated, or at least refrigerated. (i know i can make salads, but the last time i ate nothing but salads for lunch evey day(did it for at least three weeks) i lost ten pounds.  actually another question i had was what kind of meats or protien-rich or foods would last for at least five hours without going bad?  ???

I don't eat Lunch at school because I just can't stand  eating an hour after I ate breakfast so I bring a bag of pemmican or jerky and some nuts and and secretly eat them in class, then when I get home I have a HEAPING after school lunch.
I eat a lot of food.

Anything. Meat can sit out for a whole day before being eaten. I do it all the time.

Just eat a protein source (meat/fish) and bring fruits/vegetables for lunch. Maybe some nuts too.

Just eat a protein source (meat/fish) and bring fruits/vegetables for lunch. Maybe some nuts too.

Also if you're really concerned about it, get an insulated lunchbox and keep a re-usable ice pack in it. Target has some really cute ones.

I usually pack leftovers from dinner the night before, and just eat it cold. Not the best, but it does the job.

Other suggestions for protein in your lunch, if you'd rather not eat cold leftovers, include:

Salad with boiled eggs and tuna
Sandwiches: make a big batch of egg, tuna, or chicken salad on the weekend, and spread it on whole-wheat pita or a wrap rather than bread. Or eat it plain. Or stuff it inside a hollowed-out tomato.
Yogurt. Plain is good, that way you can control the sweetness yourself by adding just a teaspoon of jam or honey. Low-fat or fat-free yogurt tends to be really high in sugar, as does flavored yogurt.
Cottage cheese
String cheese
Pepperoni or Canadian bacon slices (in moderation; they tend to be highly processed and filled with salt)

Or just slice up whatever meat you had at dinner, throw it over a big bowl of greens, sprinkle some crumbled feta or sunflower seeds on top, and voila! A salad.

Hope that helps.

Tuna is great.

DO NOT get the tuna in vegetable oil though. If you can get it in olive oil that's whatyou want. Otherwise, just get it in water  and add your own oils.

Just mixing tuna/chicken/boiled egg chunks with some olive oil is the basic idea. Here are some suggestions for add-ins you can experiment with to spice it up:

Fresh herbs (tarragon, rosemary, basil, thyme)
Curry powder
Sriracha sauce
Mustard
Avacado chunks
Grapes
Raisins
Shredded carrots
Sunflower seeds
Almond slices
Pecan pieces
Dill pickle relish
Plain yogurt
Sundried tomatoes (oil-packed)
Pesto
Tapenade
Marinated artichoke hearts
Pomegranate
Mayonnaise (homemade is best)
Chopped celery
Chopped fennel bulb
Wasabi
Roasted, pureed butternut squash
Lemon pepper
Goat cheese

...that's about all I can think of for now.

i stock up on Tuna in my locker. Speaking of which...i think im running low
and i bring a cooler to school with all sorts of goodies.

In regards to the Tuna in vegetable oil
If you put that stuff in a colander and rinse it out. bam not more vegetable oil.

i bring dry oatmeal in a container, add water, then microwave. or you could just throw a raw egg in there and mix it around instead of microwave

ANND if you want even more suggestions

Not quite.  Oil and water don't mix, so the large majority won't be rinsed off.  It'll stay in the tuna.
