Tutorial: Using Google Maps to Find Parkour Locations
« on: May 02, 2010, 10:39:29 AM »
Well its rained all weekend yet again. As I sit here Sunday bored out of my mind, I have decided to make this tutorial. It uses google's street view to scout out new parkour locations. Most of the time I just walk around to find them, which works, but if you are bored in class, this works too. Also, if you live in a large city, this is a nice way to scout out locations without having to go every where. Any ways lets begin.

Step 1: Go to http://www.google.com/

Step 2: Select 'Maps' on the google bar on the top left of your screen

Step 3: Type in your location (ex: your town, college, street)

I chose my college, Indiana University

Step 4: The map will load showing your location. You can move around by clicking and dragging. Zoom in and out with the middle mouse button. You can also use a different bars within the map to navigate

Step 5: Click and hold the little orange guy and drag it onto the street you would like to view

Step 6: The streets in blue have been captured by google. This means you are able to view these streets.

Step 7: You can navigate by dragging left, right, up, and down. Zoom in and out with middle mouse wheel. Again, you can also you the bars within the map. If you point on the street and double click, it will "warp"

Here are some example of some quick spots I found while making this tutorial. I will upload better examples latter.

Quick Tips:

-Search in "urban" areas for better results
-Street view cannot show all around buildings, so go and check stuff out
-The box in the bottom right can be used for quicker warping
-Zoom out to the maps for even quicker warping
-Don't sit on your computer looking for parkour spots all day, go to them!

Problems

-Not all streets are covered
-Cars some times get in the way
-You cannot view every thing
-Hot girls faces are blurred out  ???

I hope you enjoyed me tutorial. I am new here, so I wanted to contribute some thing to the community on this rainy day.

I've used Google maps to scout out rooftops before.  Haven't run a rooftop yet though.

Why would you need to run a rooftop?

Why would you need to run a rooftop?

Maybe it needs a bit of exercise?

not that that wasn't an extremely well written tutorial but APK has a hot spots map that is done by google maps, also ours has an option where you can ad the spots you find to the map with a quick write up. theres a few on there but apk never really got the ball rolling with that project, anyway here it is

Yea I have seen that map before. It is really awesome. Perhaps people can use my tutorial to take a deeper look into the hot spots. Any ways thanks for replying.
