Saut de Chat / Kong Vault - Exit Distance
« on: November 21, 2005, 05:43:44 PM »
How do you get large amounts of distance, 3 - 4+ feet, from a saut de chat? I have trouble with this I tend to drop like 1-2feet in front of the vaulted object.

Simply, run faster  ;)
As you run at the object, try and make the dive into the kong as short as possible, making the movements so they allow you to continue much farther after the object. Its hard to explain...
you use your arms to propel you up AND out. place you hands on the object and push up, but as your feet come up, push BACK at the object the send your arms behind you, putting you into a foreward movement. Most people i help with this technique tend to hold on to the wall too long. by the time your legs are tucked, your hands should be well off the object.

another thing you can try is taking off of one foot. People who stomp both feet together in front of the object lose MUCH momentum in doing so. If you come off of one foot while in a running motion, you keep most of the speed you had while running up to the wall.

We will get you a more understandable way of explaining it soon enough. i just have to get my thoughts together.

I think I get it. so as soon as my knees start to bend toward my chest or stomache I need to push with my hands down and back to get the momentum forward more. right or am I missing something?

Nope, that's about it. The trick is learning the timing and coordination of your steps to arrive at your last step with maximum speed. Then it's just a matter of preserving momentum and letting your run-up do the rest of the work for you. When you're really going long, your body will perform a sort of cantilever motion, where you'll contact the object in a less than horizontal position (between your torso and legs) and as you push forcefully, it will create two levers, one at your shoulders and one at your hips. This boost from a powerful push with your arms in coordination with a powerful contraction of the hips (are you starting to see some core-strength parallells?) will raise your legs higher and give you that extra distance.

hmm a few things i will add/reiterate.

1. walls are easier to get distance than rails because you have to grab the rail which can slow you down. however, with a lot of practice, you should be able to go the same distance regardless of what you grab.

2. practice practice practice hitting the vault at top speed. speed will result in distance. any hesitation or stutter before you go into the vault takes away distance.

3. you need to dive into the vault. this doesnt mean dive into it like you are konging a massive picnic table but think about it. how can you get maximum distance if you take off 2 in. from the obstacle? you will end up with wasted upward momentum and lose distance.

4. to achieve maximum distance, your body must have no DOWNWARD momentum when you contact the object you are vaulting. for maximum distance, your body should have upward momentum when you contact the object. think about it, if you are already travelling up, your push off the obstacle will be easier and will add to the upward momentum and ultimately, more distance. hopefully that makes sense...

if you really think about momentum and direction, it will make more sense of exactly what you need to do.

Thanks demon!
and something i want to add to that...
you said practice at top speed. would it be better if he practiced at a comfortable speed and worked until the comfortable speed becomes his top speed? I know i clipped my toes trying to push myself too far too soon when i first started doing kongs. I would say work up to it, but do not slack one bit. go at the MAXIMUM speed that you feel you can do without throwing off your focus. do this enough and it soon turns into your top speed kong vault.

If there is some technique that you know of, Demon, that helps with getting the top speed much quicker that is tried and true, post up so he knows how to safely execute what you are asking of him! Thanks!  :D

In addition to what skipper said, you should really try to take off of one foot which will help a lot with distance, on the other hand, taking off of two feet [when done correctly and not a gigantic stomp] can get you more height in terms of a higher object as well as the height off of an object. So you just gotta pick and choose according to your situation :]

Practicing maximum speed is a lot easier, and I definitely felt more comfortable my first super-speed times in a gym setting  ;D I know that much!

One more thing, it's a little thing but flick your wrists at the end. This motion makes your arms follow, and basically makes you use your arms for the second jump. It does help, well helps me anyway.

As soon as you have learned a decent exit distance, convert it into a one footed landing, on relatively flat ground (i.e. no drop) as it's smoother, softer and faster than 2 footed.

Oh and for exit distances  it helps to be aiming for somewhere :)

good luck

I tried the techniques last night I felt the distance change. but still not up to what I want I have like 4.5 feet distance or around there. thanks guys and I will try the other techniques I need to find a wall to do this on cuz right now I was practicing on a bench in the park and trying to precision to the next bench about a 5 foot distance. but I guess I need to practice practice practice. and find a better place to do so. thanks everything you have all said makes sense and has helped alot.

a bench huh? keep in mind that you cant get as much distance off of really short objects. this is because you have to jump into it with NO upward momentum. upward momentum is what helps you get a maximum push which is why taller objects are easier to kong farther out of.

cool haven't really thought about it. I guess I need to think more in terms of momentum before the vault not having myself power through it all by myself. in the middle of the vault

ALSO, that sounds like you are konging to something the same size as the object you are konging from. err. that makes it a bit harder. most of us would even have trouble getting 5 feet to a same level object, depending on the height of the bench. Try doing it on some other object, preferably taller, and mark your distances on the ground.... baby steps are the key here.  ;)

I get you it was from a table top to the seat of the next bench

SautChats are 100% maintaining momentum due to proper technique... Ive taught some guys up here who have HORRIBLE body strength to go 8-9 feet after a 4 1/2 foot rail. Its a tech that anyone can master no matter what physical condition your in.

A good way I find how good your momentum is being kept.. is to do stand still sautchats.. as far as you can .. really jump and really pull. If you're reaching about the same distance as a decent speed sautchat.. then you know somethings up with your form. A lightbulb should go off.

Borrow a cam (or use your own) and make a small video clip of it.... Its easy to pick apart form that way to see exactly whats not letting you reach max distance.

Yep, that's the true benefit of filming your training regularly, you'll see so many glaring mistakes that it will be emberassing :p

Parkourdan that is some amazing distance any advice you would like to add to what the others have said and you have already? I think it would help others as well not just me tho I would appreciate it as well.

Its actually not that far, you can easily do it. Anyone reading this can. I dont feel like writting anymore since theres plenty of advice in here to get you going anyways.

I seriously still suggest getting a cam and filming from a couple angles and posting it on here. Youll know 2-3 posts later everything you need to work on and its much easier to get you to understand the motions involved.
