Thank you for all the warm welcomes! For the first time since starting training, I don't feel nervous talking to other practitioners!

Muse: I totally agree that the demographics of traceuses is a point of considerable interest (compared to the younger age set of the guys), and that there are some commonalities among the females. I was never one for 'sedate' activities (though I admit I liked knitting when I learnt it at the age of 10). I don't have a problem with going into work a bit bruised and banged up. Ah, the battle-scars!

Phytolith: I really appreciated the comment about taking calculated risks and it being a case of building up the mental aspect to tackle the challenges that Parkour poses. I, for one, have many challenges! Being so short AND having short stocky legs (as opposed to thin slender ones :'(), I anticipate plenty of obstacles (literally!) to overcome.

WandererInGray: I think faaaaar too much too!

Was going to brave an outdoor session today, but the skies are grey and it's already raining some parts in the city. Bugger. There's always next week.

Don't let the gray weather stop you. There is plenty of training you can accomplish inside: squats, pushups, landings, rolls, pullups, lunges, pistols (or pistol progressions), hollow rocks, wrist conditioning (plunge your fist into a deep bowl of uncooked rice and make circles with your fist, clockwise and counterclockwise),  QM, balance practice (try standing with tennis balls under the balls of your feet, with your eyes closed) :), and more!

I ended up going for a 2-hour Wushu class. Lots of squats. Boy, am I going to be sore tomorrow... ;D

Thanks for the tip on wrist conditioning. I'll give it a go with the rice, though I might get some strange stares in the kitchen!

BTW, what is 'hollow rocks', 'pistols' and "QM'?

Yo. My name's Anne, or TigerFire. You can just call me Tiger, though, since that's what I go by on TXPK, but it appears to be stolen here. Boo. Anyway, like I said, I'm from TXPK. I train with Matthew and Aardvark and...some other people, but I don't know if they're on these boards. I've been training since around Febuary, and I really love it, despite the fact that I get frustrated sometimes from not having the same upper body strength as the guys I train with. I've been lurking around APK for a while, and finally decided I should join. So, (at the risk of sounding like my school's arch-enemy) Howdy!  ;D

Hey all!  I'm Gabby.  I'm just now really getting into pk thanks to my boyfriend who introduced me to it.. After watching him and his friends do some things it really sparked my interest.. As soon as I finally truely get into it he moves and is now TXPK :( .  So now i'm kinda trying to learn it on my own :-\ .  Apparently in MS, or atleast the area i am in, parkour is non-existant..  But it's nice to find somewhere where i can atleast get pointers.

Welcome, glad you joined us! There's a lot you can learn on your own, don't be discouraged, and maybe you'll inspire someone to train with you, too.    ;D

Aha, so this is where all the ladies are hanging out! It's been a long time (over a year) since I've last checked these forums; nice to see this place hopping with activity nowadays. :)

Hi! My name is Jackie, I'm from NEPK and train in Boston and Amherst, MA. Earlier this year, some friends and I started a parkour club here at UMass, where we meet 2-3 times a week to condition and practice. Now that the semester is coming to an end, I'm looking forward to lots and lots of training over the summer months, soaking up the sunlight, going into the woods and practicing natural parkour... mmm, can't wait for that freedom!

Yo, this is Summer a.k.a. Alphfie (dunno why, just a nickname that stuck ???). I've been into a lot of physical training pretty much my entire life, being all sporty and the good stuff, but I just kinda stumbled onto free running and I've quickly developed a passion for it. I'm from the Memphis area so if anyone would be interested hitting me up, we could train together. Also, I've yet to find a good gym around here, so any information would be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm trying to focus on helping pk/free running spread a little through the city, especially to the younger crowd and kids still in school. Anybody interested in helping would be welcome with open arms! Thanks!

Welcome, Alphfie! Check the Local forums to find people in your area. As to building a scene in your area, all I can say is, just "begin." I would recommend starting a web forum and/or facebook group. You can also try Meetups.com but I believe there are fees with that. Train regularly, and post your training dates and times on whatever web presence you start up, so people searching for parkour in your area will find you. If it makes you feel uncomfortable training alone and announcing your training schedule to the whole wide internet (it did me for a long time), try to get a few friends to start with you, so you're in a group training before meeting random strangers.

Once you start getting a group momentum going, then you are in a position to introduce parkour to kids/organizations. I assume you're willing to do this because you feel comfortable teaching parkour; if not, make sure you get your skills up to a level where you can teach it (or find someone who can). Having no idea where you're at in your training, this may not apply to you, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. :) I have some ideas/resources for getting hooked up with youth organizations, which I am happy to share if you like.

Good to have you here! Happy training!

Hi there! I just got into parkour this year, after studying martial arts for several years. I live in New Orleans, LA and there are a lot of abandoned post-apocalyptic neighborhoods to practice parkour. There are entire streets where you can run the rooftops of empty houses, swing on collapsed poles, and dive through smashed out windows. Of course I wear gloves and more clothes than most to do this in case I get cut because you can get really sick with Katrina cooties! Living in an urban disaster area does have its benefits. Anyway, I'm 33, but in killer shape - I run every day, and practice kung fu and ashtanga yoga. I used to want to work for "the government", so I have a gunslinging hobby too :-)

Hey Pistolette!

Good to see another kung fu practitioner around. Stay safe in New Orleans and welcome.
