Introductions
« on: August 29, 2006, 09:58:52 PM »
Hey girls!  I figured I'd get the ball rolling by starting an into thread where we can say hi and where we are and whatnot.  Maybe we can find other chicks in our area to jam with!

So, I'm Janine, I've been practicing for about a year, but only seriously for about 6 months.  I don't have any video as of yet, but I'm working on it.  I live in Seattle and the scene here is awesome!  The guys are really accepting of femme parkour and we've got a few other girls who come out and practice every once and a while.

So that's it for me.. who's next?

Hey, guess I'm next!

I'm Amy, 25, and new to Parkour. I've been to one of the apk training days and loved it. Unfortunately things've been extremely busy lately so I haven't had time to practice outdoors as much as I'd like to. But things are looking better now, so I'll have to make it a point to find some good spots in the DC/VA area :D

I've been training in martial arts for a while now. I just tested for my shodan in aikido and Level 3 in krav maga. I did a few years of iaido back in school. Looking to pick up bjj sometime in the future, as it's offered at my krav school and I figure it'd be a good opportunity to get more groundfighting skillz. I'm pretty uncoordinated, but I'm hoping some of the MA experience will help me in Parkour so I don't die repeatedly. I think I need to win the lottery so I can quit my job and just train all day :)

Hey hey.  Weena P here. Looking foward to meeting more PK women and learn from the ladies! I think women offer a very unique and necessary slant to the PK world. Go girls.

Hey, I'm Rosie, I'm 15 and the chances of me ever meeting any of you are slim to none because I live in Scotland. :-\ Scotland is good for parkour though, especially where I live - Edinburgh.

Hello everyone!! I'm Emmie or pkemmie as it some times appears :P I've been practicing parkour for roughly 6mo to a year. I give credit to my husband "gearsighted" for getting me involved and showing me the ropes. I had spend many an hour watching him practice/train and progress into quite an impressive athlete, but never thought it would be something I could take on. Until I did, and I must say I really enjoy it, and find it tremendously empowering. I hope to join in on some of the all girl jams and get to meet some of the other ladies that make up this angle of the parkour community.  :)

Hey, I'm Cathi ... I live near Atlanta.  I've been practicing less than a month, but I really like it so far.  I'm blessed to have some skilled traceurs near me.

I'm Laurie and I've only been interested in PK for about... a month and a half?  I recently (2 weeks ago) moved to San Francisco and that's been a huge help as far as Parkour goes.  There are LOTS of traceurs here and they really know what they're doing!  And they're more than willing to teach anyone who's interested.

PK for me is about 1) overcoming fears, and 2) becoming more physically fit (in that order).  It's as much a mental workout as it is a full-body workout.

What I like is how quickly I can see myself improving already!  I'm sure there are plateaus ahead as far as advancement goes, but I anticipate progress none the less.

Has anyone else found that being of small stature is helpful in some situations, while a handicap in others?  For example:  underbars are a cinch, while it's harder to get enough air for some of the higher vaults?

Hi Laurie! I liked your vid btw!

I completely agree with the overcoming fears part, then physical fitness. Personally, I've always been cautious, so not freaking out or overthinking things are problems I'm trying to fix. But it's such a rush when I finally do something without thinking about it, and it actually works!  :o  Imagine that!

As for being small, I can relate. I'm no expert so I can't give you much advice on getting more height, other than maybe taking off earlier/farther away from your obstacle. Good cadence without stutter-stepping (something I have a problem with) is also important. I'm pretty sure there are some tips around here on how to increase jump height as well. Otherwise, it's a matter of finding an alternative way to get over the obstacle.

If you come across any discoveries, feel free to share. I'd love to hear them :)

Hello. Call me MoF. I'm 32, and a very, very beginner traceuse in the upper Midwest of the USA. I come from a mostly ballet background, with some martial arts, weightlifting, yoga and running thrown in. I mostly do parkour to overcome fears and to train my body in a different way, since ballet is so ingrained in my body. I got into it via the film Banlieue 13. I'm a high school French teacher and thought parkour would be a way to get my students interested in French class in a unique way (e.g. I am totally redoing our body parts/personal health vocabulary unit around parkour).

My biggest challenge right now is finding training partners. Then again, I've only been training for about 2 weeks. I should be more patient. :)

Lovely to meet you all! *waves* :)

Hi MoF! Nice to meet you.

What martial arts did you practice?

That's really a neat idea for your French class. I wish my French teachers were that cool  8)

Awww. Thanks. :) Nice to meet you too.
I studied Northern Shaolin Chu'an for about 3 years, pretty hardcore. I was never all that great at it but I loved the work. My sifu was excellent. I learned a lot from him.

Hi!
I'm Louisa (15) from the Lehigh Valley Area, in NE, PA. I'm very new. As in, a few days. I'm just learning to do rolls and stuff. I can't really find any PK people in my area.  I know of a few that graduated from my high school a few years ago, but i'm to nervous to talk to any of them.  They're all guys. right now i'm just attempting to mimic vids i've seen. I'd love to actually learn from someone.

Pfft. Talk to the guys. :) Don't be shy. Well, unless they're jerks. Then don't talk to them. But I'd bet they'd love to have someone new to train with.

Welcome, by the way, Louisa!

Hi Louisa and welcome! I'd train with ya if I were still in PA, but I'm back in the DC area now.

Like Muse said, go ahead and see if they're up for showing you the basics. Couldn't hurt :)

Also, I'm sure you've taken a look already, but be sure to go over the tutorials(http://www.americanparkour.com/content/category/4/60/214/) first before imitating videos. A lot of vids out there are kinda crap and not worth imitating :p

Good luck, hopefully you'll find more peeps around you.

Oh by the way, short people are lucky, you can do some stuff much easier than us tall people, like fit through tree limbs and stuff. Jumping is overrated...kinda :-\

haha, I guess the grass is always greener... climbing and reaching things is harder when you're short. ah well, things to work on.
