Pretenders
« on: January 02, 2010, 08:14:28 PM »
I've been doing parkour for four years now and I don't want to go on a rant but I'm tired of these (for a lack of a better term) "posers" who have seen parkour on T.V. and think they are great because they can vault over a picnic table. I think we can all agree APK welcomes new comers, and I'll be the first to admit I'm still a novice, but since this new popularity granted by television I seem to hear more and more people claiming because they can kong vault a table.

Ask them to train with you. You'll quickly find out the truth about those who claim to train and those who train.

Why do I get the feeling those 2 dont belong together?

I'd recommend encouraging them. Tell them that being able to kong a picnic table is a great first step, but with some training and hard work they can do even better. Encourage them to train safely but hard and be their role model, and they'll do fine.

Talk to them about their training and encourage them to join a group like APK or a local practicing group. If they're more the annoying stereotypical poser I find keeping the persona of the distant sensei keeps them complacent enough to listen to you.

And if they don't, hey, they can go hurt themselves as much as they like.

Oh no, I'm completely willing to train with them, and even help them out with what I do know. I'm just tired of everyone thinking they are great when they are a novice.

Sooo, if he's still a novice after four years of parkour, wouldn't that mean he doesn't train either? :o

Posers are those who go against the original philosophies and train solely to impress others.

we are after all in competition with only one person, and that is ourselves. So If they are great in their eyes... let them be great... As long as they don't try to go too far over the edge of their abilities..

but if they flaunt around and claim to be better than .... idk, Daniel Ilabaca.....  then you gotta put them in their place and say "hey!! Listen Poser!! you can be as good as him if you train long and hard enough. But right now you are a NOOB!!!"

Sarcasm aside, I was thinking the same thing. If they think they're good, that's awesome. Having a positive feeling about yourself and your abilities just makes you better, so long as you're not a cocky asshole towards anyone. So unless they're being jerks to you about it, I don't see it as a problem.

Don't be an elitist. Everyone discovers parkour one way or another, and they saw it on TV. You probably found it on the Internet. Welcome them, train with them. If you don't feel knowledgeable enough to teach them, don't. Let them learned the way you probably learned: internet sources. If they continue to be jerks, then they're just jerks. You can find those in any walk of life.

He was actually taught by David Belle himself, originally the yamakasi only consisted of David and Dedwards.  :-Sarcasm

But seriously everyone starts somewhere and it's okay to be proud of acomplishing a goal. Posers are normally people who dress or act like they are in a group but really aren't, like a "skater kid" who can't step on a board with breaking at least 4 bones.

the whole four years of parkour and still a novice thing, is exactly true,   in the whole scale everyone who trains on this website is a novice in comparison to when then can truely call themselves a master,    to become a "master" at anything,  for martial arts for example, it takes atleast 20 or 30 years, (on the low end) to become a master, so he's being very realistic and humble about that, and i personally think that shows a lot about his character,   sure we may think a "novice" is someone just starting out but it extends to so much further.

honestly that could very well be true, but you have to understand that parkour was around before david belle,  he was inspired by the guy who inspired his dad or something like that,
