Correct Dip Form??
« on: December 22, 2009, 09:06:34 PM »
I used the search function and looked for this topic, however I only found training logs and how-to's. None of them mentioned a correct way to perform a dip. I also found a relatively old topic discussing pain from doing dips, but I didn't find anything helpful (also too complicated for me). I looked on Youtube, but I can't tell if those are right or not.
So, can anyone provide a video, or if not, a written description of how to perform a dip correctly without passively damaging joints? And if I'm wrong about anything, point that out. I'm just a beginner :P

Oh ok, so i was doing them right. Any other warnings I should be aware of? Like, I know I should stop before failure.

As long as there's no pain or discomfort you're good.

For strength stay between 3-6 reps and add weight.

For endurance go high number

Thank you, I do that :)

One more question: What's the difference between a push up and a dip, benefit-wise?

Just going off personal experience as a beginner: they helped a lot with climbs-ups.  They also seemed to work the lats and trap muscles along the back in fewer reps than push-ups.

So could I replace pushups with dips?

erm... did you read what I asked carefully? He said dips are superior to regular pushups. I then asked if I could completely get rid of pushups (the regular kind) and do dips instead.

I have a dip related question.

At what point are the two bars (or other equivalent) too far apart? Is there any type of danger if they are a little wide? Just wanted to make sure, thank you for your time.

It's not exactly good for your shoulders because it's weaker in abduction as you move into flexion or extension

Avoid it if you can. You can also do them on a single bar as well.

Yeah, as far as I'm informed they should be right at your sides with your arms straight up and down at the top of the movement.

Thanks a lot, how do you do the dips on a single bar? (I google'd it but didn't find anything, thank you in advance.)
