Need help with Backtuck
« on: December 16, 2009, 02:40:35 PM »
Hey guys...I'm seriously about to give up on getting a back tuck...everytime I go out to learn, I'll be completely ready mentally, like I honestly think... "I'm about to do this", but when I get ready to take off, I just can't get myself to do it.

What have you guys done to help your backflip?

Thanks,
Marshall

I was once the same way, my parents had always drilled into me the stupidity of most accidents and how easily I could get paralyzed so I grew up terrified of flips. Even though I was always monkeying around on everything and doing rolls before I knew about parkour, even on a trampoline I freaked out when It came to throwing a backflip (Pathetic I know.) But eventually I just made myself do it. That's all there is to it, force yourself to do it that first time, and your fears will be greatly reduced. Find a local gymnastics gym that offers open gym and do it into the foam pit. You should definitely be able to do that, and from there it's only a matter of time and pactice, first landing it on a pad in the foam pit, and building it up until ground level, and finally making yourself throw it on the ground. You're scared because you don't know what to expect, once you get the movement down and know you can do it it'll come much easier. Trust me, even us more cautious ones can get good.
A state of mind when you are performing a physical movement that is neither too simple or too complex. Your focus rules out all other mental processes, your mind has no time for words, worries, or distractions. There is only timing, spatial awareness, and the feeling of satisfaction as you land

That paralyzing fear is Darwin saying "HEY. HEY. YOU'RE NOT READY. BE CAREFUL. DON'T DO THAT."

So you have to find ways of building up to it! The best way is to find a gymnastics gym and some experienced trainers and get them to help you. You can use foam pits, trampolines, mats, and spotters to go through different progressions to build up to them!

The whole gymnastics place thing is what's making me mad about the whole deal.

Because I went to an open gym and was doing them perfect with a girl that worked there telling me how to do it, I did it onto pads, and on the floor, but now, the fear comes from 1 of 2 things...

Where I'm doing it (my yard)
or the fact that I don't have a professional here to help... idk... I mean, I've got a pretty high vertical, so I think I'm just gonna go out and try it...

Have you tried back hand springs? How about front flips? They never scared me as bad as back flips. Just keep doing other types of moves until you build confidence in your abilities. No point in rushing into it if your mind doesn't think you're ready.

the simplest way to put it is you just do it once you do it, it will get less and less scary until you dont really even think twice anymore

Yeah I totally agree. Those Guys teach this all day every day and have all kinds of tricks to help you..

You just have to get the muscle memory down when you are at the gym. Go back a few times before you give up. You can always find a mattress or some type of landing pad at home to get the feel again before trying it on grass.

Also, the spring floor helps allot even if you don't think it dose so you may also want to train tour vertical leap.

They are super fun and cool so don't give up so soon. you will be really proud of your self when you get it. If it wasn't hard it wouldn't be worth doing.

Konging low stuff is stupid. Just jump over it. Or just do a cool flip over it.
