Heh...rolls...
« on: December 10, 2009, 03:28:54 PM »
Alright so heres one of the many stories of roll troubles...i just found mine a little different. I'm 14 and have been parkouring for a good 2-3 months or so. i can wall run/climb, do most of the vaults and lands...but when i reach rolls i have a problem. i have one one single section of my spine. i seem to be doing it correctly, and assume the pain is on only one part of my spine because i am doing it diagnally like i should. i figured it was just getting used to rolls until people said it should never hurt. so now i am at lost and am fearful of doing permenant damage to my spine. any ideas would be great thx :-\

NO! Bad Altair! Parkouring is not a word and Parkour is not a verb...

but when i reach rolls i have a problem. i have one one single section of my spine
Need more info...what part of your spine is feeling pain, are you rolling off your left or right shoulder, what kind of surfaces are you training your rolls on...etc..

i figured it was just getting used to rolls until people said it should never hurt.
When first learning rolls it's common to feel discomfort due to your body reacting to something it's not accustomed to...but as soon as you start to feel actual pain then that's the result of improper form and technique, keep drilling!

Yes, rolls go diagnol on your back, however, it does not have to hit the whole surface from your shoulder to hip. You probably need to tweak your technique to minimize spine contact with the ground. Also, Diagnol does not necessart mean a straight line. Personally, I feel that I roll more like an S shape :P and yes, I got over my pain problem with that.

Look for Adam's Advanced Roll Tutorial on YouTube.

Welcome.

Flip through a few pages of the general Movement section and you'll find over a dozen threads on rolls, including a sticky thread. There's a lot of good advice to be had. The condensed version is that you may have to modify the roll and your body positioning slightly. We all have different postures, torso-lengths, widths, bone structures, etc. Perhaps the best thing you can do is get down on the ground and wiggle around to see what position your body requires.

curl up in a ball on the ground and roll around till you find the sweet spot. Then aim for that next time you go for a roll. I wouldn't do it in public but hey it worked for me.

I've been practicing for nearly two years and I still haven't got the roll down.  The sucker evades me to this day.  Then again, I don't practice it all that much.
