Parkour and Freerunning > Age 30+
Welcome Quatrogenarians!
SpinmanADK:
Hello Everybody,
I dabbled in Parkour for about three weeks in 2009, but have come back again starting this spring, and I have to say I'm having a ton of fun. There's a lot of satisfaction to be had in watching your wife shake your head at you as you pull off a new move in the front yard in full view of your nice, albeit stodgy, neighbors.
Anyway, this forum for experience-rich adults is a welcome place for a 35 year old like me - what a great idea! Certainly as we age there are physical considerations to ponder, but the thing that has surprised me the most is how quickly I let myself age mentally because I didn't remain vigilent. Breaking through fear barriers and exercising creativity is a necessary part of parkour, and by doing so I feel like I've been able to reduce my mental age, or perhaps even my perception of my own age. I've also found it satisfying to be able to differntiate myself physically from others my age because I feel it sets a good example for my kids. I hope it will show them how important it is to stay active throughout their lives, and how sometimes it's good to still be a kid at heart even when others may look down on it.
As a young buck I used to do all sorts of crazy stuff - rock climbing without a rope, ridiculously long and strenuous day hikes, taunting various unsavory characters for the purposes of starting a foot chase. Now I'm finding that my increased wisdom is yielding greater benefits in terms of training and preparation (among other things). Couple that with the fact that my body is fortunately more capable than I anticipated at age 35, and I think I've got a recipe for a level of improvement I may not have been able to attain at age 25. Understanding and utilizing progression effectively has been very beneficial both in skill improvement and in injury prevention for me, and I'm looking forward to continuing it for a long time. This forum and website has been a great resource - it's just too bad there aren't many traceurs in my area. Oh, and you should see the looks I get when I try to recruit my age-comparable friends to do Parkour. Absolutely priceless! Thanks all!
