I think i might be rolling wrong...
« on: November 27, 2009, 05:22:30 PM »
I was rolling in my backyard, not jumping off anything, just straight roll drilling. I am right handed, and i have always rolled off of my right shoulder. I have noticed that my left leg kind of tucks under me, so that when i am done, i am knelling on my left knee. Is this wrong? How should my final stance after a roll be?

Each person has a different way of rolling. The one thing that rolling is for is to reduce landing impact.

I had the same 'problem'. While it isn't a wrong way to end the roll, on concrete you might bang your knee a bit. Try tucking your legs in a bit more to your chest when rolling, torque your body as well.

Make sure that your coming out of the roll right. If you can get a video of your roll that would be a lot of help. For now I can only hypothesize of your technique.

the way i learned, and teach, rolling is to start on your shoulder that is NOT your dominant hand. put your dominant hand palm down on the ground fingers spread apart. take your other NOT dominant arm and lay your forearm on the ground perpendicular to your dominant hand. your fingers on your NOT dominant hand should be pointing at your dominant hand with your elbow facing away from your dominant hand. your entire forearm should be resting on the ground. push a little bit forward with your legs, set the flat area between your NOT dominant arms shoulder, neck, and shoulder blade on the ground and roll diagonally across your back. you start on your NOT dominant shoulder, and roll across so your dominant side hip touches the ground. you should tuck your legs obviously, and be able to end up crouched on both of your feet without any assistance from you arms or hands whatsoever. it will take practice and im not saying you have to start on your NOT dominant shoulder. but that is how i teach it. you may be able to roll perfectly beginning on your dominant side, but be sure do go diagonally then to your NOT dominant hip and practice getting onto your feet using only the momentum of your roll.

good luck
