I'm no good at climbing
« on: January 31, 2010, 06:16:30 AM »
As in, running up walls. I've been into parkour almost a month, and the highest I can climb is just above my height, if I jump. Is this normal?

I'm not expert at climbing, so someone else may have better information on the subject than myself, but I do think i'm pretty decent at it. So, i'll see if I can help you out! :D

If you're wall-running to get to a top of a wall and climbing up, it really depends on how many steps you put into it, and the placement (and position) of your foot on the wall.

I'd suggest making sure you do the following things, and then see if you still have the same problem.
(I can't stress enough that i'm no expert at it..)

1. First, find the wall. (Of course. xD)
2. Locate on the wall, about where your mid-thigh is at. (This is where you want your foot to be when you go to wall-run.)
3. Get a running start at the wall, looking at where your foot should be on the wall. (Jogging may be best, first. Just make sure you have momentum, because that's going to be the driving force that gets you up.)
4. When you're close enough, place your foot out so it'll land on the wall, and allow your momentum and body weight to collapse inwards a bit on the wall, so your leg bends as you go into it.
5. Push down with your toes. NOT out. Down. If you push out, you're going to go backwards. Push down, so you go up. The momentum of your jogging/running comes into play here, allowing you to go up more easily. And of course, allow your leg to extend back to it's normal length.

:D

As you get more comfortable with that, you could try and add in more steps up on the wall to get even higher.
(I've only gotten two in, and that's hard.. For me anyways.)

I hope this helped. :] However, if the chance that I just misunderstood what you needed help with occurs, please clarify and i'll try to help you out again. :D

Check out Adam McC's Urban Current Wallrun Tutorial.

Does that help?

Personally, I find pushing a 45 degree angle down and towards the wall works best for me (it both pushes me up enough to keep going up, while keeping me a good distance away from the wall to fully reach up and grab the lip). Experiment with what work's best for you - and definitely look at all the tutorials you can. There's good, solid information in there that will help improve your technique.
Good luck and safe training!

Pretty good point there, David..

I should try that next time I get the chance (whenever the ice goes away..) and see if that works better for me than what i've been doing. :D

Sounds like it'd save me some cuts and ripped clothes.. Stupid brick walls..
