Wrestling?
« on: November 18, 2009, 08:42:47 PM »
So I was planning to do wrestling this year, but I couldn't since I busted my knee up, but I have a couple questions.

1. The routine we follow is pretty much all bodyweight and endurance because being a wrestler you need the endurance to lift your bodyweight many times in a match, I'm just wondering if this is going to screw me up? Especially because we mainly focus on dips, pushups, pullups which I've heard around here is not the best way to workout.

2. I need figure something out, my coach told me (keep in mind this coach is old school, he's been wrestling and coaching for almost 30 years) that weighted back squats would blow out my knees in the future, especially since I'm so tall, myth or fact?

3.When going into takedowns in wrestling, you go into the lunge position alot, should I add lunges into my training to work that skill?

I wrestled for 3 years (School) I dont know fit thats the kind of wrestling youre talking about, but, i would think lunges would help, and bodyweight exercises will definitely not hurt at all.

You can't really go wrong with dips, pullups and pushups.  I am sorry if we gave you the impression that that is wrong.  Just doing insanely high reps is nonsense if your goal is strength -- for wrestling you will need a significant endurance component so its fine.

The squats things is a myth.  You need to pay special attention to form because its very easy to f#ck up squat form...but with safe form its beneficial.

Lunges wouldn't hurt.

I asked for it for Christmas, along with a squat rack, barbell, and plates. I think I'm going to start working endurance and power (sprints) since I may switch into wrestling the December, but in the off season lift heavy with SS program and GOMAD.

Endurance is going to be something you definitely want in wrestling. By the 3rd period, youre REALLY tired, endurance work would help a lot i would think

There's the muscular endurance component that's pretty heavy and you'll probably feel first, but there's also the energy pathway efficiency you'll have to address.
On that note, metcon with a little HIIT on the side would probably do you some good.
