One Hand "Handstand"
« on: November 18, 2009, 10:52:37 AM »
I've been working on it but it's really hard like my elbow will give out, my strong arm (left) is what I'm depending on.
Any tips?

Well it sounds like you need to improve your upper body strength, I recommend doing more pushups, bench-pressing, handstand push ups etc.
Then practice doing one handed handstands against walls and keep practicing that and eventually you'll be able to do it without the wall.

How long can you hold a handstand?
Can you hold a finger assisted handstand?

If your elbow is giving out it tells me that you are either not ready for the stress of the OAHS, are not achieving full lock out in regular handstands, or are swinging into a OAHS.

When you do a regular handstand, don't walk around to stay up, that ruins your balance. Instead, focus on keeping your hands on one place. Once you can hold a handstand in place for about a minute, one handed handstands should come easy.
Focus, Intensity, Tempo,

How should my legs be hanging in the air in other words what should I do with my lower body when I enter the OAHS?

Most people's will look similar to this:

Not me... though I recognize the place the SJSU Library in downtown San Jose.

Sounds like you would benefit from working regular handstands.  Work holds, walking, HSPUs, anything and everything as much as possible.  My experience with handstands is that volume (how often, and how many you do) is very important.  When you are a bit stronger and more confident, start working OAHS against the wall to see if your strength is there.  Good luck.

After doing two handed for a while, I tried 1 handed and found I can do it for a few seconds.  I start with two hands, and just let one hand off the ground.  Even though my right arm is my best, I find it is easier to do with my left.

This isn't a one armed handstand. It is dynamically different. Two armed handstands first, then move to fingertip assists, then start removing the arm SLOWLY.

I'm going to write a tutorial for this soon simply because there's way too much bad information out there.

My problem with breakdancing is that a lot of the progress is made with ill-regard to joint stability and health. Telling someone who may have a weak shoulder girdle to start OAHSs by training Nike's is a good way to ruin the health of the joint simply due to the angle it's placed in and the impact it receives. Seems like a good way to get injured to me.

How long can you hold a OAHS for? I'm not trying to be aggressive, but if you cannot balance for a solid slow 3 count then you're not doing a OAHS, but rather a controlled fall.

I can hold OAHS for about 15 seconds. I can also balance on either hand and hop on them (Not single. Regular handstand) and I can do GOOD handstand pushups (Slow down to head near ground then up). I've been working handstands for a long long long long long time and I understand where you're coming from man. No offense taken.

At the moment, no. I'm in the process of making my 1 year showreel. I am going to an open gym hopefully friday though and I can get someone to record a video for me though.
