Eating Healthy at School when I can't bring lunch.
« on: November 25, 2009, 08:51:49 AM »
So, base info. I've been trying to eat healthier, which is usually successfull at home. School is a whole different story. I go to a private school, and we can't bring lunches without an extreme medical reason, with a doctor's note. My school lunch is well stocked with veggies and fruits (we have a giant salad bar and a fruit table), but the normal food from standing in line isn't normally healthy. What should I eat, on days that chicken or fish isn't served? Should I stick to a salad and some fruit only on those days? But then that's not a balanced meal. Help please~!

What else is available on days when chicken and fish aren't served?  The more complete the answer, the better we can help you.

It varies, but I'll run through next weeks lunch menu for an idea on what they serve us. Grilled Cheese and Brunswick Stew, Pork BBQ, Salisbury Steak, Pizza Pasta with Fritos and Ruffles, Pizza and Fried Chicken Livers, Sliced Roast Beef. We have hamburgers and hotdogs alot, as well as the Grilled Cheeses.  Steak is common too, and Beef tips, and Corndogs. We have chicken/fish normally once a week. It's a great tasting lunch usually, just not healthy. And I'm getting sick of eating Salad every day. We have everyday selections too though which areee Garden Fresh Salad Bar, Soup of the Day Saltines & Ritz Crackers, Assorted Fresh Whole Fruits, Peanutbutter & Jelly, White, Wheat, & Whole Grain Breads, Plain & Blueberry Bagels, Baked Potatoes w/ Toppings. (I just went to the website and copy-pasted.)

Fruits and Veg from the salad bar.

Roast Beef, Chicken Livers, Pork BBQ, Salisbury Steak, Steak, chicken, fish and hamburgers should all be acceptable sources of protein to accompany your fruit & veg.

I thought I wasn't supposed to eat pork or beef. D: A sticky-ed thread said not to, but to stick to chicken and fish. (but beef was okay if it was lean cut).

backtracking my last statement. I think I misunderstood the wording of the other thread. DX So, beef and pork ARE acceptable, in smaller portions?

That's a very loaded and complicated question.  The hard and fast answer is "yes, if it's good quality".  For a more comprehensive answer, figure out what matters to you (health concerns, training concerns, moral concerns), and then go research the nutritional benefits, the long-term health effects, and the industries for beef, pork, chicken, fish, other meats, and anything you'd use to substitute for meat.

I say there's no excuses not to eat healthy. Sneak food and eat it in the bathroom.
This post was based off of my personal gatherings. Enjoy:)

Your school must be very well-funded.  The boys room in my high school always smelled terrible.  I was always retching half the time.  I wouldn't be able to keep anything down if I ate in there.

Though maybe girls rooms are different, so the point would be moot for Mindy?

The bathrooms smell quite fine, but the cameras would definitely catch me skipping lunch, especially if it became an every other day occurrence. D: I'm sticking to a chicken and fish protein diet, so for lunch I guess I'll just snack. We have a break between 2nd and 3rd period where we CAN bring food for snack. I guess I'll eat lunch then, and snack at lunch. :D

Where a coat, put stuff into the pockets, then discreetly sneak it out and eat it :D
