Coincidentally, I started off Parkour because of the Youtube videos I saw.
The ones I saw were mainly ones that talked of how deep the goal of Parkour was.

I think you are generalizing too much. For some, it is/was the kind of the 'door' that we were able to open and look into. Without those Youtube videos, I wouldn't be who I am today.

Of course, there are those that aren't the type to look into something and study it first. That is what gets people hurt or worse.

Some don't some do. But, overall I think you are generalizing too much.

I see where you're coming from but I have to disagree. I watched a youtube video of parkour and here I am 3 years later. With an activity like parkour, one that isn't widely known, the only way people can learn is by watching videos or having the luck to meet an experienced traceur. The second usually isn't the case. We just have to hope that all those youtubers do a little more research before attempting anything too big.

There is definitely some truth to this.

In interviews, I talk about the problem as this:

a new person watching a youtube video doesn't know if the traceur / freerunner is a seasoned veteran or an idiot who will not be walking the next day.

I had an idea to make a youtube channel which had reviews of movies, so that even though the vids are on youtube and hosted on youtube, you could get some commentary on them by a team of people at APK.

It sort of works like this with comments, but with comments they are so random and anonymous that they often make it worse.

Our VIDEOS page does make a small attempt at labeling some of the popular vids on Youtube.

I also got into parkour through youtube.. (somewhat anyway)

But like Jake said, your generalizing WAY to much..

I saw mainly the flips and the roof top gaps and all that crazy stuff. But even though thats what introduced me, im way more interested in watching progressional training videos to help myself progress nice and safely.

I can agree with you though, I've seen countless examples of what your saying.

That would be really awesome to do, itd hep with the people just seeing it trying to do something stupid...
Maybe I am, I just hate some of the reactions and labels I've gotten from people that think wrongly of what we do.

Anguish, you're going to have to get used to it, and learn to compromise your way through it.

I don't know if you've seen what we do, but it looks pretty crazy. Once we get into it, we know its a wonderful training process, we know the conditioning makes it safer than most sports, we know there's a meaningful philosophy behind it. But a first time viewer won't. Namely, youtubers.

But you've got to let go of the desire for instant gratification, and have a little faith in mankind. I started Parkour because of crazy youtube videos. First thing I did was go out and look for roofs to jump off. But before long I caught on. And now I'm among the most strong advocates of safe training and conditioning in my state. I teach weekly classes that are 50% conditioning and 50% structured learning process. I host seminars that are the same.

Think of it like football. Everybody watches football. But young kids don't go out and start stiff-arming, head butting, and tackling each other for 4 hours straight after watching the game. They might feel inspired to try it, but their own natural abilities inhibit them from being quite so dynamic. Same for Parkour. Beginners still have the fear and the lack of ability. And naturally, as those qualities grow, so does their understanding (generally). Gotta have some faith. Do what you can, in fact, do everything you can to help spread the positive awareness, but do it in a positive way. Else people will just resist it.

i learned from youtube,   i started off thinking it was all called freerunning, but it all led into me learning more about it,   but thats just because of who i am, then i found this site and i've been training off and on, depending on my school load and life load and what not, and plus the campus police from on me and reason, but yea i think it all depends on who the person is who finds the informantion, is he a person who looks for enlightenment into the subject or just wants to be cool like the guy he saw online and he can automatically do it.   youtubers aren't all bad, grant it there are a lot who are,

I would venture to say a vast majority of us here came from youtube videos.

I must be just surrounded here by wrong minded people then...

Thats not uncommon. Remember, right now you're in a community of people who all want to go farther in their training. That means.. most of us will have a pretty good mindset. In the real world, a lot of people have bad mindsets. But they don't last very long at all. Its hard to progress much farther without beginning to understand more about the art. If you don't understand it, you don't get far, so people give up. Thats my experience, anyway.

I came from youtube videos. Though, I was introduced to the idea of Parkour/ Freerunning from Assassin's Creed and, shortly after, Mirrors Edge. Once I found it on you tube, I watched a TON of samplers and tutorials. From there, I studied the techniques and philosophy and realized it fit who I am perfectly. The rest is history after that. I started trying some simple stuff at the park and in my house and have slowly progressed since. And here I am, nine months later doing fairly well.

Ryan, [I like real names... :P]

A lot of us have gone through this same thought process - generally saying people who try out parkour for the first time are doing it wrong. I believe, at least for some, this thought stems from the "underground" or exclusive sense we get from training parkour. This in turn leads to thoughts of eliteness, since we think we "understand" parkour and they don't.

To combat this, we must extend even more grace to beginners. Instead of ranting about them, why not put that effort into pointing them in the right direction?

You must look at your overall goal. Is your goal to spread parkour in the best way? Or is it to keep it to yourself as an exclusive, underground discipline? You must decide.

I cam from YouTube BUT on that note, I came from YouTube nearly 3 years ago. So when you think about it, the videos that were on there that long ago, were mostly David Belle and Russian Climbing. I learned the right way =]

Youtube can make parkour seem attractive to those who have never seen it. But you can't really understand parkour and especially the steady progression involved with parkour if you've never actually done it before. It makes me want to tear my hair out when I try to explain parkour to people who will NEVER understand it unless they try it, which they never will. Especially when their opinion is that parkour is inferior to standard sports. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it just pisses me off. I used to do standard sports, I used to be a varsity soccer player. But after quitting soccer due to the stress of competition, I can say that parkour is the most enjoyable "sport" I have ever done, and I've never been more passionate about anything else in my life. Well, except maybe when pokemon came out but still  :P
