Handstands- A progression necessity?
« on: November 03, 2009, 10:20:33 PM »
Hey, I've been working on handstands for a while and I still fail to get in a handstand 2 out of every 3 attempts probably. Most of the time I get into a handstand I topple over a second later, and the longest I've ever held one for is probably about 5 seconds. I don't think that strength is my main issue, because when I push myself into a handstand against the wall I can do about 7 HSPU's, so probably my problem is mostly something to do with balance or finesse. Anyways, this is getting very frustrating, and though I will continue to work on handstands and handstand strength work, I was wondering-is this like a prerequisite for most freerunning abilities? Other things I would like to learn are sideflip, back tuck, frontflip, etc and I don't really have a spotter or a gym to practice these in, so for now I feel kinda like I'm stuck on handstands. Should I just continue working hard at handstands, and slowly work into a freerunning progression from there(handstand-cartwheel-handsprings-flips) or is there a way that I can simultaneously work on flips or something else? I guess my main question is are handstands a very necessary thing that I should perfect before attempting to move forward in my freerunning career? If so does anyone have any tips for me?(I typically fall back from not having enough momentum or acheive the handstand for a second or two then topple forward). Thanks, any and all tips and answers appreciated

Handstands are great to train, and it takes a long time (years) to get very proficient at them.  A 5 second handstand is not bad at all.

That said there's little to no crossover between handstands and flips.  If you want to get good at flipping, train flips with an experienced coach in a safe environment.

Honestly, if you're new I'd say concentrate on safe landings, rolling, vaults, wall runs, etc. before working on flips.

handstands are a PAIN IN THE ASS. it took me about 2 months to really get them down.i used to think if i were be able to hold it for atleast 10seconds.now i can hold it for over a minute.just practice practice!   try practicing them for 30minutes a day.

in time youll start noticing that u got more balance and basically it just come to you after a good while
