Musle spasms
« on: October 24, 2009, 08:09:43 PM »
I'll get straight to it. For example if I were to go into a squat and hold it for a second and then push up one of if not moth of my legs, the musles right in the middle of my legs right by the shins, spasm and I have to get off that leg. It feels like its tenseing up really bad and then it goes away after a few seconds. Any idea what it may be?

Sounds like shin splints but i don't really know, Ken would probably answer this better than me.

Meaning no offense but I had shin splints a ways back and this feels nothing like it did then. When I had the shin splints it felt pain on the inside of my shin where the boney stuff is, this is on the outer side where the musle is.

Stretch and massage.

Sounds like muscle cramps... which should go away if you practice a bit more.

might check your mineral balance... calcium lactate, potassium supplements

So do I just drink more milk and eat more bananas? I hardly eat them anymore like I used to.

I think you could be looking at muscle spasms, but I think there may also be a component of how you are performing your squats. If your knees are drifting too far forward doing squats it is possible your are activating the muscle unintentionally resulting in spasms that force you to stop the squat.

The thought about the vitamin and mineral imbalances is a good thing to check out, but another consideration is again with body mechanics in protecting your back. Its possible (no way of telling without a medical exam) that in the deep squat position you could place pressure on the nerve in your spine that is linked to the muscles of the leg. Be sure to keep your abs tight through the full squat and see if it still happens.

I know this post is a little older, but I hope that you are feeling better.
