Almost passed out
« on: November 01, 2009, 02:36:55 AM »
Today at around 5:45pm I was down at the playground doing parkour conditioning.
This is what I did-

5-10 mins stretching
10 pushups
10 dips (with feet straight on the floor)
10 kneeups
10 situps
10 pushups
10 dips
10 situps
10 squats
10 step ups (each side)
About 5 rolls (just right side)
and somewhere in between I did a quick run around.
And some random stuff.
And then when I got back to my apartment, my heart started beating faster for absolutely no reason. It wasn't just a fast heartbeat like when you run, its the kind that actually hurts. Then my vision started blurring and I felt quite tipsy and felt like I was going to pass out for a few minutes so then I leaned on my door (my dad wasn't at home so I couldn't get in.) then later I felt a lot better but still a bit strange. This has never happened to me before. I would like to know what was this and if I should continue to do parkour.

Could be for alot of things, how much did you eat throughout the day before you worked out, how much water did you get, were you sick before you went and worked out?

Common case of working out to much. Along with dehydration, something to that extent.

This is actually less than I usually do, but usually I don't run, I do my cardio in cross country twice a week.
Before I went out to workout, I ate a pack of chocolate oreos, 2 cups of water and 1 cup of soya milk. I don't think it has anything to do with oreos, I eat chips and stuff sometimes before I workout.

There you go, you're giving your body simple carbohydrates, sugar, etc. to work out on, that's not what your body needs and you're not going to see very much results with your diet. http://www.eatmoveimprove.com/beginners/ Read these articles.

@Sean Au - Great point about the simple carbohydrates only providing quick fuel. Without any lasting supplies of muscle glycogen established through consumption of more complex carbohydrates, then working out will leave you lacking in energy.

I think that the fast, near painful heart beat could be related to dehydration, but more importantly related to an imbalance of electrolytes in the system, particularly potassium, calcium, and sodium. All key elements for muscle contraction (heart) and function of the entire body. I would look into a regular multivitamin supplement (pre or post work out) taken with food an hour before or an hour after working out (in your case it might be better before.

On a side note related to the multivitamin. A study was done examining the contents of portapotties. It was found that the majority of multivitamins consumed, even high quality ones, were not digested and simply passed through the system. For most multivitamins that you can purchase, the best way to make sure that your body absorbs the vitamin is to crush it before you consume it. Of course this makes it taste awful, but at least you are not throwing it away.

Drink plenty of water and don't take things to fast.  :)

Peace.
