Help with frontflips on flatground?
« on: October 26, 2009, 04:12:41 PM »
Hey guys, first time posting here  ;D,
first a little background.

I started freerunning about a couple weeks ago, always was really into it, never really had the motivation to do it.
then i saw a couple videos and whatnot and decided to get in for real.
since then ive been training, as well as working out a lot, and got a few vaults, climb ups and basic 180 movements down.
then i decided to learn a frontflip ( in approximation to my ultimate goal, the wall flip) just to get used to some acrobatics.
ive practiced on a trampoline for a couple days, and progressed rather fast, now i can land one in a few and i am able to clearly tell what is going wrong when i do it.
now i want to move on to solid ( yet soft) surfaces, i tried a couple run-ups to frontflip and failed miserably, total underrotation, landed on my back and butt a few times, but no big deal. i figure its cause i dont get as much height when im on flat ground, so basically i need to know:

Is there a way to gain more height, ( jump technique) and faster rotation when doing solid ground flips?

thanks for any help guys. :)

Hope this helps... http://www.vimeo.com/5778865

It's my method of looking at it (and most flips in general). Lemme know if you have any questions.

To get more height, try blocking.

That "blocking" principle is wicked interesting, i've never heard of that.  Can this apply to pavement and grass?  I'm assuming so.

Sorta related, but wallflips aren't hard man. I personally think they're easier then frontflips. Just go up and kick off as you lean back. I started landing them consistently after my 4th try at them.
Aren't we all running?

Yeah blocking is super important... The only way really to do a front flip right.

They are super hard on your joints if you under rotate so I recommend pads or go to an open gym (plus they will have professional staff on hand for advice)

Regardless it also takes a substantial vertical leap and the higher you jump the better the front flip will be. Just because you can do it on a trampoline doesn't mean you can automatically do them flat land the difficulty gap is huge even if you use as little bounce on the tramp as possible. Unless of course you already have really great vertical.

If you are doing them off of stuff you want to have the minimum strength requirement of a body weight and a half squat and a double body weight dead-lift. Otherwise you are destroying your joints even if you don't feel any pain.

Check put the general fitness form for vertical jump training there are some great links to outside resources also.

Good luck hope this helps.  :)
Konging low stuff is stupid. Just jump over it. Or just do a cool flip over it.
