Handstands
« on: October 25, 2009, 12:43:19 PM »
Hey guys, I am trying to learn a handstand and ive been watching some tutorials. I am training on a wall right now. I am wondering how long does it normally take to learn a good handstand? Also when you are falling forward or backwards what is the best thing to do to get back to your original spot.

Handstands seem to be different for everyone. Some people pick them up faster than others. Generally, its just a LOT of practice and time that you need to put in to see results. Practice every day. Go for time on a wall, try to get up to a few minutes if you can. Then just practice freestanding like crazy.

I've been working on my handstands for a year, and I can only hold it stable for a 5-10 seconds. I tend to walk around a lot.
Life is what you make of it.

Shuffle your hands around to get you balance back... not sure what you're looking for here. You can't think yourself back into balance... :D

Maintaining balance also helps when you keep good form... tight core, legs straight... when individual parts of your body are moving around in different ways, it makes it harder to keep your whole body up.

As Jake said, just do them all the time. Every time I'd stand up from my desk or have to wait for my computer to hurry up, I'd do a handstand. Eventually it just clicked for me. I still can't hold one consistently but I at least can hold one now.

Eventually you should be able to make corrections (when you are over or under balanced) by altering which part of your hand is applying the pressure to the ground, instead of moving your hand.

A good way to make sense of this is to stand on the ground barefoot.  Shift your weight around.  You can shift more weight to the ball of your foot, the toes, either side and the heel.  The same thing can happen on your hands, it's just less stable because we're less experienced at it.  Hope that makes sense.

Really, read the Beastskills tutorial and practice, practice, practice!

Only move around so you don't hurt yourself. Don't get into a habit of walking around during your handstand, it's bad balance.

i was taught to find a wall in your home or just anywhere.. put your hands at a comfortable place for you in front of the wall and throw you feet to the wall to work on you balance.. and just work you hands closer and closer to the wall until its perfect and you wont need the wall anymore.. so far its worked amazing for me.. idk.. i guess you could try that too
