I CANT do a Kong Vault
« on: October 24, 2009, 04:59:44 PM »
No matter what I do, I can't get my legs up high enough.  My feet always trip over the top of the object.  Any tips?  Or is it the usually, jump higher/more power kind of thing?

Hmm, A few things you could try:

Bring your knees to your chest and heels to your butt. If this doesn't fix things, you could try shorter obstacles. Another thing that could possibly be hindering your ability to do a kong vault could be that your torso is too vertical, as in your hips are too close to the ground. When doing a kong vault, you should try to make your torso almost parallel to the ground. I hope that helped.

Agreed. Sounds like you're not getting ferocious with your dive. Keep in mind you actually need to be quite horizontal for a kong to work. Your legs clear the obstacle by being behind you, understand? You tuck your knees in to return to an upright position.

I just learned how to do Kongs JUST HOURS AGO..... so I can give you a tip as how I did em. Try looking down, have you head facing the object you are vaulting over, and run fast, I noticed speed helps when you dive.

But as I learned how to do Kongs just Hours ago, don't take my advice too seriously, that video Andy posted seems to be a good resource to learn from.

Also remember, A kong vault is basically a Diving Monkey Vault, Learn how to Monkey Vault and a Kong will be that much easier.

Instead of thinking I CAN'T do a/the [insert move here]...

True dat. At a jam recently, we made a pact where anybody who said "I can't do that" had to do 15 pushups. Needless to say, we were all a lot more confident that day.

Make sure you get your hips up as high as possible, and don't keep your hands on too long. I try to think of the cat pass as a jump, assisted by your hands for an extra boost. The thing is that a lot of people think that your legs go between your arms. Not even the case, a lot of people don't even have long enough arms to get their legs through without clipping. So by the time your legs get to where your hands were, the hands are already gone.

At my circus school, it's "I'm not able to do that yet" or "I won't". I enjoy the latter because you have to own up to the fact that you're wimping out :P
